[Travel] Itinerary to Sapporo, Hokkaido (札幌,北海道), Japan.

Sapporo, Hokkaido is definitely one of the most memorable and fun destinations for my entire Japan trip. The relatively quiet town has breath-taking views, fresh air and many more exciting tourist attractions for your entertainment. Here is a list of what you should not miss in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.

New Chitose Airport/ 新千歳空港

Doraemon Exhibition/ Doraemon Merchandise Shop/ Doraemon Cafe

Hello Kitty Merchandise Shop

Royce' Chocolate Factory and Chocolaterie

You may wish to browse around New Chitose Airport as soon as you have touched down Sapporo, Hokkaido. The airport is definitely one of the coolest airports in the world! It has a few interesting things that you may wish to explore- Doraemon Cafe, Hello Kitty Merchandise Shop and Royce' Chocolate Factory. You may find some interesting merchandise products that you could not find elsewhere, though most of them do not come cheap, but you can always find some interesting products here to add to your collection.

To reach Sapporo Train station (from New Chitose Airport), simply buy a JR Train ticket which costs 1,070 Yen per trip from the machine. The train ride is approximately 40-50 minutes.

Aji no Tokeidai/ 味の時計台

Sapporo has some of the best Sushi and Miso Ramen eateries in Japan; we did manage to try a few Ramen eateries but we thought Aji no Tokeidai stood out. The Ramen specialist is quite a successful establishment which has many branches not only in Sapporo but many other parts of the world as well, including Shanghai, China. We settled our dinner here at the branch near Susukino/ Odori Train Station, it was somewhere between the pathway to subway.

The signature dish- Miso Ramen (756 Yen inclusive 8% GST) was especially delectable. The pork broth appeared to be very greasy but it was smooth and light on the palate, leaving a unique lard-aftertaste lingering the mouth after a few sips on the broth. The noodles, on the other hand, were beautifully cooked till al-dente and wonderfully complemented by the vegetables. You will also experience the melt-in-your-mouth Japanese Char Siew/ Roasted Pork Belly. Highly recommended.

Otaru/ 小樽市

It costs 640 Yen for a one-way train ticket from Sapporo Train Station.

Otaru is a small port city that you would definitely want to spare half a day or a full day here to explore the area. You get to buy fresh seafood or dried seafood products at relatively cheaper rates than most cities in Japan. You may even order a cup of drink (or even Otaru Beer) and sit nearby the canal and enjoy the breath-taking view.

Sankaku Fish Market/ 三角市場

It took us around 50 minutes for the train ride. Walk out of the JR Otaru Station and walk towards left, you will be able to see Sankaku Fish Market, which houses many seafood restaurants that serve some of the freshest seafood in Japan!

We wandered around the area and was greeted warmly by the lady owner of this stall. She offered us to try on their Tri-color Don (1,500 Yen with Crab Miso Soup). Diners can choose any three choices out of seven- Hotate (Scallop), Uni (Sea Urchin), Botan Ebi (Sweet Shrimp), Kani (Crab), Salmon, Ikura (Salmon Roe) and Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe). It is a must to try their Hotate, it was so fresh and soft that it literally melts in your mouth! You can taste salty-seafood essence in your mouth after a few bites. Another quintessential order will be Uni/ Sea Urchin, it shared the same characteristics as Hotate, it melts as soon as you pop it in the mouth! The meal was then completed with a bowl of Crab Miso Soup.

Canal Cruise

Otaru's Canal is the central part of Otaru city and used to be one of the busiest ports in Japan. We thought walking by the Canal may be too tiring for us, thus, we decided to enroll in a canal cruise. The day cruise (for 40 minutes) costs 1,200 Yen per person; it costs more for night cruise (probably 1,500 Yen per person). There is a kiosk near the central part of the Canal where you can purchase the tickers for the canal cruise. Avoid boarding the cruise during hot afternoon on Summer, unless you want to be toasted or grilled along the journey. It was a great experience if you ask me, the chilly sea-breeze, rippling and wondrous emerald-blue sea view are worth every single penny spent.

Melon and Vanilla Soft Ice Cream atop Rock Melon (700 Yen)

Grilled Snow Crab Legs (800 Yen)

Grilled Squid (350 Yen)

Walk towards the tourist district once you have finished the cruise and you will be greeted with plenty of eateries. We spotted Soft Ice Cream parlor that offers Soft Ice Cream together with Rock Melon which we thought it was rather intriguing. The Soft Ice Cream was beyond amazing but the Rock Melon was nothing out of the ordinary, probably overshadowed by the sweetness of the Ice Cream. Snow Crab Legs, on the other hand, were for novelty sake; definitely nothing to shout over. Grilled Squid, however, was toothsome. It was nicely done and even better to be served with a dollop of Japanese Mayonnaise for the extra sweetness and smoother texture.

Sapporo Beer Factory

Another famous tourist attraction is Sapporo Beer Factory. To reach there, take the Loop 88 Factory Bus Line near Odori Bus Station (10 min-walk from Odori Train Station), you may ask the information counter in Odori Bus Station for a more precise direction to the bus station. No, the bus station IS NOT within the Odori Bus Station, it is somewhere by the road side. It costs approximately 280 Yen for one way.

It is free to tour the Sapporo Beer Museum but it is recommended that you pay 200 Yen to have a taste on the nicely brewed Beer. We tasted Sapporo Black Label and Sapporo Classic but we prefer the latter one, for its mellow bitter-aftertaste. Every single purchase of Beer-Tasting Ticket is entitled for a free snack (choice of Plain Cheese, Onion Cheese or Crackers).

Shiroi Koibito Chocolate Factory/ 白い恋人

Entrance Fee: 600 Yen (a complimentary Chocolate)

Shiroi Koibito Soft Ice Cream (300 Yen)

The visit to Shiroi Koibito's Chocolate Factory was an eye-opening experience. It is one of the most successful stories of Sapporo, Hokkaido that the brand's products have become the quintessential souvenirs representing Hokkaido. It is optional to pay for 600 Yen for the Factory tour; I did not find it spectacular for the tour but my friend thought it was a good experience. You may still look around the area if you have decided not to pay for 600 Yen. Try to look out for some exclusive products as buying the famous Chocolate biscuits may be cheaper at New Chitose Airport's tax-free zone (Japan has 8% GST). On a side note, it is recommended that you should try the Shiroi Koibito Soft Ice Cream; so milky, smooth and delicious that you will burst into tears after a few licks.

To reach the place, take train to Miyanosawa Station and walk west. Do ask the information counter or get help from random passerby by showing them the name. The place is so famous that every single nearby resident should be able to assist you.

Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill/ 羊之丘展望台

Relatively quieter and far from Sapporo town center, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill offers a scenic view overlooking the city. It may be a little tricky to reach there, take train to Fukuzumi Train Station (福住駅) and transfer to a bus. There will be display signs indicating the directions to take the bus to Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill. Entrance Fee was approximately 520 Yen on our visit, excluding the bus fare. It is worth to spend an hour or two here to relax and have a short walk around the area. Foot Bath Hot Spring/ Onsen is available for free too. The Park is open from 9 am to 5 pm Daily. However, opening hours may vary depending on season.

Hokkaido Jingu Shrine/ 北海道神宮

It is free to enter the Shrine but the distance between the Shrine from Maruyama-koen Station is very far. It took us approximately 15 minutes to reach the place. It is one of the best Shrines throughout my entire Japan trip and it is definitely worth investing some time to explore the place. Experience the "Zen-ness" of the place and how prayers are done in Japan. You may wish to cleanse your hand before entering the Shrine.

Nemuro Hanamaru/ 根室花まる

You will regret for not visiting this Sushi establishment; although the waiting time may set you back; but every second spent is worth it when you get to taste the Sushi. I am sure you will agree with me if you have tasted their Sushi. Nemuro Hanamaru is located at Stellar Place of JR Sapporo Station (6th Floor) and it offers some of the best yet affordable Sushi (in Japan) ever!

Our wait was approximately 110 minutes, simply write down your name on the guest book and wait for your turn. The friendly and helpful staff will let you know when you should come back and we were glad that we did follow her instruction! The cheapest plate (Dark Blue in color) costs only 140 Yen (including GST) each! Every single plate consists of 2 pieces of Sushi.

Salmon Sushi (140 Yen for 2 pieces)

Ika/ Squid Sushi with grated Daikon Radish (140 Yen)

Tebiko/ Flying Fish Roe Sushi (140 Yen)

Sweet Shrimp Sushi (140 Yen)

Kani Sushi (248 Yen)

Tamago Sushi (140 Yen)

It is a sin to miss their Salmon Sushi, so fresh and thickly sliced that we could barely put it in our mouth. For 140 Yen, it could be cheaper than many Japanese restaurants in Malaysia, not to mention the higher living standard in Japan. We did manage to kill at least 5 plates of the Salmon Sushi. The Ika Sushi was equally delectable too, unlike the plain version in Malaysia, Nemuro Hanamaru added some grated Daikon Radish for the extra vege-sweetness to the Sushi, pushing it to the next level. Others were pretty decent, though not out-of-the-world good, it was worth the wait solely for their Salmon Sushi. It could be the best Salmon Sushi that I have ever tasted.

Nijo Market/ 二条市場

Lastly, you may want to drop by Nijo Market if you wish to seek for some Dried Seafood or to grab some yummy Seafood for your breakfast. Not as cheap as Otaru's but good enough since its pretty near to city center. Walk until the end of Tanuki Koji/ 狸小路商店街 (between Odori and Susukino Train Station), cross the street and you should be able to see Nijo Market right in front of you shortly.

Have Fun in Sapporo!

Caffe Bene @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

The wait is over as the famous Korean dessert specialist- Caffe Bene has finally opened its doors to the public on 29th of August in Gurney Paragon Mall Penang. Caffe Bene had fans licking their lips for anticipation everyday (since its opening), evidently seen from the relentless queue right outside the cafe. Their menu is rather straight forward, they have three signature desserts- Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice), Waffles and Bread/ Toast; full menu can be found on their website. Though the Bingsu and Waffle were not mind-blowing, we thought they can be comforting especially on a sultry-hot day. However, I am not sure if I am willing to queue for half an hour just to have a bowl of shaved ice.

Caffe Bene is located on Ground Floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, right beside Edo Ramen and a stone's throw distance away from H&M and Lacoste.

Caffe Bene's famous Pat Bingsu (Rm 12.80- Small/ Rm 22.80- Large) which comes with some Peanut Powder, Hazelnuts, Almond Flakes, sweet Red Bean Paste and a piece of Tteok (Sweet Rice Cake or Korean Mochi). The ice was coarsely shaved, it was somewhat out of our expectation as we were expecting a smoother texture. It has a mellow Milky flavor, the shaved ice barely registered any sweetness. The dessert derives the sweetness from the Red Bean Paste and according to the waiter, diners should mix all ingredients together before enjoying the dessert. The Rice Cake, on the other hand, was hard to the bite and too chewy to our liking. Sharing is recommended if you are trying the dessert for novelty sake.

We prefer Green Tea Bingsu (Rm 12.80-Small/ Rm 22.80- Large) over the previous variant. The Green Tea flavor was more intense as compared to Pat and the extra scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream stood out. We enjoyed the generous amount of Almond flakes and Hazelnuts for the nutty flavor and texture too. Also, Green Tea and Red Bean make a better team don't them?

Tiramisu Waffle (Rm 15) shared the same quality and characteristics as the Belgium Waffle I had in Tokyo. It was soft in the middle with crispy-hard edges. The Waffle itself was not sweet but the Tiramisu Ice Cream added a sleek of sweetness to the Waffle. It was a pity that the Waffle was not served hot, the contrast in temperature would have made the flavor stood out. It was decent but I am not sure if I am paying Rm 15+ for a small piece of Waffle and Ice Cream again though.

Australian Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司) @ Jordan, Hong Kong.

Another famous and voted as one of the must-visit Cha Chan Tengs (Hong Kong Style Tea-Restaurant) by many, Australian Dairy Company attracts long queues everyday. Visitors from all over the world come to this place and wait patiently just to have a try on their famous Scrambled Egg Sandwich and Steamed Milk Dessert. While their foods were impressive, their service was one of a kind. We were rushed in to our seats and forced to share a table with others. The distance between tables is so narrow that you could barely turn your body around. The waiter will stand right in front of you expecting you to make your orders right away. The atmosphere was intense and the orders arrived to our table in a jiffy (before I could even take my camera out from my bag). Everyone seems to eat in a faster pace than usual. Horrible service aside, their foods were pretty good and we reckon that this place is worth the visit if you happen to be in Hong Kong. A great place to experience the Hong Kong fast-pace environment too.

Their signature Steamed Egg White with Milk (HKD $26), you can have it served Hot or Cold and we opted for the latter one. It was the perfect dessert for a hot and humid summer day. The sweet and refreshing dessert comes in a silky smooth texture, little effort was necessary to scoop it up. It melted in our mouth instantly, leaving a pleasant, eggy and milky aftertaste. Absolutely lovely.

Australian Dairy Company's famous Scrambled Egg Sandwich (HKD $17) was lip-smacking! The Scrambled Egg carried a hint of buttery-milky aroma with soft and fluffy texture; brilliantly sandwiched between two slices of piping hot soft bread. The bread was so soft that it almost fell apart when lifted. Everything was precisely calibrated, highly recommended.

[Travel] Itinerary to Tokyo (东京), Japan.

Tokyo, the capital of Japan and a world renown metropolis. There are many things to do, to see, to eat and to shop there. Fortunately, I did manage to drop by Tokyo for three days on my recent trip to Japan. We did not manage to do a lot of things due to time constraint and of course, shopping. Here's a list of what we did in Tokyo (and what you should include in your trip too):

On a side note, it is highly recommended that you purchase a Tokyo Metro Pass from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport before you start your tour. The Tokyo Metro Pass is available either for 1 Day (800 Yen), 2 Days (1,200 Yen) or 3 Days (1, 500 Yen). We opted for the 3 Day-Tokyo Metro Pass which allowed us to board on any Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway Trains. It does not include JR Trains and any private trains either. Please do note that this Tokyo Metro Pass is only available for oversea visitors on tourist visas only.

Tokyo Tower/ 東京タワ

A landmark or an icon, whatever you call it, Tokyo Tower is a must-visit place in Tokyo; well, at least take a photo right in front of the tower. The 333 meter-tall tower can be easily spotted anywhere. To get there, take a train to Akabanebashi Station and follow the display signs for directions.

A ticket to the main observatory hall costs 900 Yen, steep price but good for novelty sake. I did not think it was worth it though, but since I was there, I would not mind to pay extra more just to experience and have a look at the view, overlooking Tokyo city. There is also a souvenir shop, a cafe and some photo-booth available up there. We spent 15 minutes exploring the area and decided to leave for other attractions. Tokyo Tower is open to the public on 9 am to 10 pm while the last admission is at 9:45 pm.

Zojo-ji Buddhist Temple/ 増上寺

To make your train ticket worth every single penny spent, it is recommended that you check out Zojo-ji Temple as well. Approximately 5-minute walk from Tokyo Tower and you will reach Zojoji. Nothing spectacular but since you are in the vicinity, I see no reasons for skipping the place. Not as "zen" as compared to other temples but good to stop by though. Free admission.

Edo-Tokyo Museum

The Edo-Tokyo Museum exhibits real life Edo era architecture; visitors get to experience and learn on the culture and history of the Edo era via some reconstruction models and interactive materials. Do spare a few hours if you wish to examine and have a closer look on the artifacts. Entrance Fee is 600 Yen and the visiting hours will be from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm while Saturdays will be on 9:30 am to 7:30 pm. English/ French/ German/ Spanish/ Russian/ Chinese and Korean voluntary guides are available from 10 am to 3 pm at 6th floor voluntary guide desks. It closes on every Monday. Edo-Tokyo Museum is accessible by a couple minute walk from Ryogoku Train Station.

Tsukiji Fish Market/ 築地市場

Head there as early as 4 am in the morning to witness the auction but it is not possible for us who do not have a car as most trains run at 6 am. We were not financially ready to take a cab either. Hence, we decided to take our time and we only managed to reach there at 10 am. The place was still busy as usual and long queues were spotted right in front of the famous Sushi Dai and Daiwa Sushi.

To reach Tsukiji Market, take train to Tsukiji Shijo Station but NOT Tsukiji Station. It is still possible to reach there from Tsukiji Station but with an unnecessary 10-15 minute walk. From Tsukiji Shijo Station, follow the direction on the display signs and locate Exit A1. You will reach right in front of Tsukiji Fish Market once you are out from the station.

While we were taking our sweet time to browse the area, we noticed an old lady was selling Sakura Mochi and we were tempted to try. We were glad we did, it was soft-chewy with a sweet red bean filling and a gentle aroma of Sakura/ Cherry Blossom. Good experience on the traditional Japanese snack.

We could not afford to wait for Sushi Dai and Daiwa Sushi; the half-price promotion outside Sushi Maru caught our attention. We did not want to spend so much for breakfast and thought that this could be a very good option for us to kick start the day. The place was quite empty on our visit, the staff was not that friendly either. The Chef kept asking us if we would be interested to try on some other seafood and we were a little irked by that. We decided to go for the limited 30 set offer- 2,000 Yen per person for 11 pieces of Sushi with a bowl of Miso Soup.

10 Pieces of assorted Sushi

Anago Sushi

A slightly heavier vinegar flavor for the Sushi Rice but every single piece of Sushi was made to order. We especially enjoyed the Charred Salmon Sushi for the extra hint of smokiness while maintaining the tender, juicy bite. The Sashimi was sliced thickly to my liking but the Sushi that steals the spotlight was Anago Sushi. It was absolutely lovely, though not as fat as Unagi, the seawater Eel stands out with its unique flavor. It was lip-smacking with the additional touch of the sweet sauce.

While the meal would have cost more in the two famous establishments, we thought it was a pretty good deal at 2,000 Yen per person. However, we did not find the Sushi here mind-blowing. Nemuro Hanamaru at Sapporo, Hokkaido serves better Sushi than them (at least to me).

Odaiba/ お台場

Fuji Terebi/ Fuji Television Building

Rainbow Bridge

If you have purchased the Tokyo Metro Pass, please do note that the JR Line to Odaiba does not include in the Tokyo Metro Pass. You would have to purchase a separate ticket from Shimbashi Train Station (for the Yurikamome Line). There are plenty of things to do in Odaiba. The place itself houses two to three big shopping malls. Tourists may want to go to Fuji Terebi to have a look but we decided to skip that.

A gigantic Gundam right in front of Diver-City Tokyo

Palette Town and Ferris Wheel

A 10-minute walk from Odaiba will land you right in front of Palette Town, which is next to Toyota Mega Web, one of the largest showrooms by Toyota. Guests can experience some of the latest technologies from Toyota including braking system or to look at the latest car models that have yet to be released. We get to experience and play a couple of the interactive games but the queue can be quite long, so do spare some time here.

Shibuya Crossing

It was indeed a unique experience to join the crowd in crossing one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world. A very good place to see the crowd will be the Starbucks located on Second Floor of Tsutaya. Starbucks took the prominent spot where guests get to enjoy their Coffee while watching the world goes by. We spent quite some time up there taking photos and to rest our shopping legs.

Kitkat Chocolatory

The world's first Kitkat Chocolate boutique opened in Tokyo earlier this year (2014) in Seibu Departmental Store of Ikebukuro district while the second boutique opened at Tokyo Station. It is not a boutique entirely, but rather, more like a kiosk housed within a supermarket. It has four flavors- Sublime, Sakura Matcha, Cream Cheese and Chili flavors. Each box of 4 bars is priced at 432 Yen. Overpriced and I did not find it outstanding either. Go for the usual ones (exclusive flavors in Japan) will be good enough. Good to buy as souvenirs though.

Meiji Jingu Shrine/ 明治神宮

Another tourist attraction- Meiji Jingu (5-minute walk from Meiji Jingu Mae Station) which I did not find special at all. It was just another Shrine with long walk. Probably too touristy that it loses the "zen" feel. Free admission so you may want to check it out if you have the time.

Yoshinoya/ 吉野家

Yoshinoya, one of Japan's largest fast food chain restaurants that serves good Beef Don and Pork Don. Yoshinoya can be found all over Japan, the fast serving speed and wallet-friendly price tags are something that make them special.

Buta Don/ Pork Rice (550 Yen)

Gyu Don/ Beef Rice (700 Yen- Large)

My friend had the Buta Don which he thought it was okay, tender Pork slices completed with toothsome seasoning and sauce. Good for the price but not gloriously delicious. My Gyu Don, on the other hand, was impressive. A raw Egg was given, the correct way of eating should be: to beat the egg first before pouring it over the rice. I did it on purpose to show the freshness of the Egg which it was clearly shown by the firmness of the Egg Yolk. A generous amount of chopped Spring Onions will then be added onto the Don. The Beef was tender and even smoother with the addition of Egg, the sauce complemented the dish instead of overshadowing it. The Gyu Don I had in Malaysia seems to be a lot sweeter and I would prefer Yoshinoya's.

Paper Pepper Cafe @ Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Georgetown, Penang.

A new management has taken over De Yard Cafe, the place was refurbished and given a complete new look. Paper Pepper Cafe has a unique yet different concept, customers can purchase their self-designed Postcards and have it delivered to any destinations or to have it delivered in future (maybe 2 years later). The cafe has a very quirky interior decor which exudes a young and vibrant vibe. The place was a little warm on our visit (even though on late evening) and it may be frustrating for the heat-intolerant. The cafe is still new and has yet to finalize their menu; their current menu has limited dishes but they serve Western dishes with a few types of Snacks, Canapes, Pasta/ Brunch dishes, and of course, a couple types of desserts.

Paper Pepper Cafe's signature Canapes (Rm 18) come in 4 different types: Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese atop Japanese Cucumber, Ebiko/ Japanese Prawn Roe with Cream Cheese atop Cream Cracker, Crab Meat dressed with Fresh Cream atop Japanese Cucumber and lastly, Strawberry with Cream Cheese served on top of Cream Cracker. I was especially enamored with the Ebiko version, how can the briny pops of seafood essence go wrong ? The Smoked Salmon and Crab Meat Canapes were pretty average but the Strawberry-Cream Cheese combo did not work for me unfortunately. It was somewhat wrong, the Strawberry struck my palate with a strong jolt of sourness while the creamy-greasy Cheese Cheese had me filled with a different texture: cheesy and creamy. I may appreciate this more if it has a sweet-factor.

Sweet ending was Strawberry Pancakes (Rm 15.90) which come with 3 slices of Pancakes, layered with Strawberry Jam and served with Vanilla Ice Cream and Fresh Cream. The Pancakes were nicely done- soft and fluffy but we did not enjoy the ersatz Strawberry Jam and Magnolia Vanilla Ice Cream. The lack of sincerity left us underwhelmed. Also, we thought the price may be a little steep for that portion and quality.

You Le Yuen (柚乐园)

Stepping into You Le Yuen is like stepping into a time portal. The place has the setting just like a few decades ago. The wooden antiques adorning the walls exude a pleasing sense of tranquility; diners get to dine in amid of all these precious antiques and get to experience how did the previous generations dine in during the older days. The warm hospitality from the hosts- Wendy and Alan added a welcoming touch to our dining experience. They were friendly and enthusiastic in sharing about the stories behind the place. Travelers too, get to experience the same thing and I am sure the hosts- Wendy and Alan will be more than willing to share about the culture, life style, food and many other areas that may spark your interest from a locals' perspective and different angle. The restaurant is only available by reservations. You Le Yuen serves home-styled Napalese-Indian food, with a unique personal touch. It is located at Love Lane, opposite to Saint Xavier School and a stone's throw distance away from Budan's Brew at Argus Lane.

We started with a bowl of comfortingly warm soup- Mussels and Clams with Lemongrass Coconut Soup. It was a little heavy on the palate for a start, the soup was reasonably salted with a strong aroma of Herbs and Spices while the use of Coconut Cream added some creaminess to the soup. The real draw of the dish was the discernible seafood-sweetness. Not too shabby but more marks will be awarded if some bread (French Baguette perhaps) was served to us.

A very refreshing appetizer- Chef Naresh's Mixed Salad is somewhat similar to Salsa, with Chef's personal touch of course. It consists of some chopped Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Parsley, Capers, Onions with a little Vinegar. As simple as it may seem, it acted as good palate-cleanser for us refresh our taste buds and continue with the feast.

Chef Naresh continues to impress us with his Cashew Nut Yogurt Chicken Masala and Gobi Paratha. Three generous Chicken Thighs were beautifully cooked with remarkable depth of flavors and flecked with a generous amount of Cashew Nuts. We were expecting the dish to have a hint of Yogurt-sourness but it turned out to be perfectly balanced. Needless to say, the fall-apart-tender Chicken Thigh was a perfect complement to the premium quality Basmati Rice. Another way to enjoy the Curry- to dip with Gobi Paratha. The Cauliflower-stuff Bread was aromatic and good on its own but it fared better with the Masala. It was a pity that the Gobi Paratha was cold and hard the moment we get to enjoy it; blame it on the unexpectedly longer time for photography.

Knowing that Pork may not be a common affair in most Indian restaurants in Malaysia, Chef Naresh dishes out his Braised Pork Belly with aplomb. The dish was deftly seasoned and the meat was braised till fork tender. It was good on its own but even better spooned over rice or to go with some Naan.

The star dish of the day, an Otak-Otak inspired dish- Steamed Coconut Fish; received the unanimous votes as the best dish of the day. It surprised us with an avalanche of flavors; it has a hint of Coconut-creaminess with a mellow and soft spiciness; while the thinly sliced Lime introduces a sleek of acidity to the dish. The cleverly used Herbs enhanced instead of overshadowing the fish. Talk about the freshness of the fish, the pristine white flesh (of the fish) should give you an idea.

A famous traditional Punjabi dish- Aloo Mutter which consists of Potatoes and Green Peas. Flavors were precisely calibrated and seasonings were minimal so that the sweetness of the ingredients was able to speak for itself. It was not outstanding but it was comforting enough on a rainy day.

Sweet ending was Wendy's Home-made Brownie with Magnum Ice Cream. The Brownie was firm, moist and definitely chocolaty to my liking. It was not sweet on its own, the sweetness comes from the Chocolate Brownie Magnum Ice Cream, a sleight of hand-combination.

One Dim Sum (一点心) @ Prince Edward, Hong Kong.

Another famous Dim Sum place for both locals and tourists will be the one-Michelin Starred Dim Sum eatery- One Dim Sum (一点心). The place is well-known for its inexpensive yet quality Dim Sum. You will usually need to queue during peak hours. Our visit was in the late afternoon (probably 4 pm), thus, we need not to wait and there were quite a few empty tables around. Despite reading many negative reviews on the service, we were treated very well by a friendly staff on our visit. It may be a little tricky to get to the place, from Exit A of Prince Edward/ 太子 MTR Station, walk east towards Playing Field Road until you reach your first junction. Turn left into the junction and you should be able to see One Dim Sum in catchy red signage on your right. Prices are unbelievably affordable for the fine-quality food and gigantic portion; every single order of ours was served piping hot. I will definitely make a visit back to this place again.

The quintessential Dim Sum item- Steamed Siew Mai (HKD $24). Every single Siew Mai/ Dumpling was loaded with Meat and Shrimp filling. Unlike most Siew Mais that we have here, One Dim Sum's version was one or two notch higher. The bouncy Shrimp definitely pushes the dumpling to the next level by adding another layer of dimension and no, they do not use minced Pork meat; nicely sliced Pork meat was used for a meatier and more satisfying bite. One of the best Siew Mais I've ever had.

Steamed Chicken with Mushrooms and Fish Maw (HKD $22) is not a common Dim Sum dish here. Smooth and tender Chicken Thigh was steamed till perfection, together with Dried Shitake Mushrooms and Fish Maw; seasoned with a minimal amount of seasonings. Not bad though a little greasy; not good enough to "wow" me.

Custard Bun lovers would be glad to know that they do serve pretty decent Egg-Custard Buns (2 for HKD $13) too. The skin was pillowy and airy but the real draw was the Custard filling. It was sweet with a hint of savory Salty Egg Yolk which balanced up the sweetness. Nice elements, good combination.

We did not want the usual Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun/ Rice Rolls variant that we could find here locally, hence, we decided to go for their Steamed Cheong Fun with Dried Shrimp (HKD $16). To our surprise, there were a total of 6 Cheong Funs served to us; and we were really shocked to see half a dozen of Cheong Funs at that price. Little amount of Dried Shrimp/ Hae Bee/ Har Mai/ 虾米 was added to the rice paste and rolled together with some chopped Spring Onions; lightly drenched with Soy Sauce. The texture was smooth and we enjoyed the contrast in texture: chewy-hard Dried Shrimp, crunchy Spring Onions with silky smooth Cheong Fun but the Soy Sauce did not seem to complement the Cheong Funs well enough. Nothing overly exciting; maybe we did not order the correct dish, try to go for other variants (for Cheong Fun).

[Travel] Itinerary to Osaka (大阪), Japan.

The third largest city in Japan, Osaka is famous for its food; both Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki were first made famous in Osaka. The cultural-rich city has many things not only to eat but to see as well.  We traveled with Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong International Airport to Kansai International Airport. We did not have much time to spend over there (just two days) but we did manage to visit a few famous tourist attractions.

Kansai International Airport/ 関西国際空港

Kansai International Airport has a very cool store- the Pokemon Store! Pokemon Fans can now purchase some limited edition collections; the Pikachu in Pilot uniform is exclusively available to Kansai International Airport (with only two sizes available), Key Chain-sized (860 Yen including GST) and a larger one at approximately 1,400 Yen.

To reach Osaka city center, head to second floor with a sign showing JR Kix Station, walk across the pathway and spot the blue JR ticket office. We bought the tickets in a package, which we thought it saves us a lot of time and effort. For 4,060 Yen, we've got Two Tickets of Haruka Train (Return) which were good enough for us to reach Tennoji from Kansai Airport and vice versa. We received a ICOCA card with a credit of 2,000 Yen too. The card allows you to pay for your bus and train fare, or can be used for purchases in most convenient shops. Surrender the card to the authority and you will receive 500 Yen (for the deposit plus your unused balance), however, an administration fee of 220 Yen will be deducted.

Osaka-Jo (Osaka Castle)/ 大阪城

Visitors can learn about the history of Osaka by visiting the famous Osaka-Jo. The castle was built by Hideyoshi, a well-known Japanese warlord in the 16th century. It is very easy and straight forward to reach Osaka-Jo, take train to Osaka-Jo Koen and follow the directions indicated by the displaying signs. The 15-minute walk was torturing. We visited the place on Summer and it was probably around 34 Degree Celsius. Be prepared to walk for quite a bit if you wish to pay a visit to the place. Admission Fee was 600 Yen on our visit. Traipse yourself up the stairs (you may take the lift of course, but be prepared for the long queue) and you will be greeted a scenic view overlooking Osaka city. An extra 300 Yen allows you to wear the costumes for photography purposes.

Next to the Castle is a souvenir shop which sells a wide range of interesting souvenirs, Ninja Shurikens (Japanese Weapon) are available too. Is it worth visiting the Osaka Castle? Yes.

Takoyaki/ たこ焼き or Okonomiyaki/ お好み焼き

Okonomiyaki (700 Yen with Rice and Miso Soup)

Yakisoba (700 Yen with Rice and Miso Soup)

Do not miss Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pancake) or Takoyaki (Octopus Ball) in Osaka as these two delicacies were made famous and popularized here and yes, they are very famous in Osaka. You should be able to hunt some of these at Dotonbori Street/ 道頓堀, there are plenty of small kiosks there in the evening; almost like a night market.

To reach Dotonbori Street, take train to Namba Station and exit Gate 14 or 15B. Walk towards the canal for a minute and you should be able to see the entrance from there.

Kuromon-Ichiba Market/ 黒門市場

Kuromon is a famous market in Osaka, it sells a wide range of fresh fruits, vegetables and fish. Many fruits in Japan are seasonal, on my visit, we had a lot of plump and sweet Peaches and Prunes. The Figs were equally toothsome either. If you wish to look for souvenirs, you can get a cheaper bargain here. If you are a fan of Soya Milk, try not to miss the fresh Soya Milk here in Kuromon. There are two stalls selling it at the same price (70 Yen for a cup). It was literally the thickest and most "soya" Soya Milk I have ever had.

Take Exit 10 from Nipponbashi Station and walk towards left once you are out of the station. Walk for few minutes and you should be able to locate the entrance of Kuromon Ichiba Market on your right.

We had our lunch here at this humble and quiet store. It sells Japanese Grilled Unagi, price ranges from 800 Yen to 3,500 Yen.

We decided to go with the recommendation from the lady owner (whom speaks good mandarin), we had the 1,600 Yen set. It comes with some Tsukemono (Japanese Pickles) and a bowl of Miso Soup. The thickly sliced and beautifully grilled Unagi was lip-smacking. The slightly burnt aroma enhanced instead of overshadowing the flavor while the fats of the Fish lingered in the mouth, leaving you to ask for more. It was even better to go with their sweet Tare Sauce. So good that my friend wanted to go back on the next day.

Something exotic, we had Grilled Eel Livers for 400 Yen. The Japanese believe that Eel Livers are very nutritious. The Livers were quite good to be honest, nicely grilled together with the sweet Tare Sauce; leaving a mellow bitter-aftertaste.

Namba Parks

A very famous shopping district in Osaka, Namba houses many shopping malls and Namba Parks is one of the well-known ones. A very big mall that you may want to spare some time here to browse the area. While you are there, try to look for Nana's Green Tea. The famous Green Tea specialist has everything for a Green Tea fan. We had a Green Tea Drink with Green Tea Soft Ice Cream and Sesame Drink with Sesame Soft Ice Cream for 1,170 Yen (both). Yes, they were great and the place provides us a very good environment to stretch our shopping legs.

It is very easy and straight-forward to reach Namba Parks, take train to Namba Station and follow the directions from the displaying signs. Walk for approximately 10 minutes and you should be able to see the mall.

Have Fun in Osaka!

Granny's Hokkien Mee (奶奶福建面) @ Taman Lip Sin, Bayan Baru, Penang.

Nestled under one of the flats at Taman Lip Sin (beside the open-space Car Park), Granny's Hokkien Mee had fans licking their lips in anticipation since their opening a couple months ago. Expect to wait no less than 30 minutes for a bowl of their Hokkien Mee; you will be amazed to learn about the overwhelming responses from the nearby residents over this Hokkien Prawn Mee specialist. The Prawn broth was good and the quality may be slightly above average, but I am not sure if its good enough for the 30-minute wait though... To find Granny's Hokkien Mee, turn into Lengkok Nipah from Jalan Bukit Gambir, you should be able to see Granny's Hokkien Mee on your right shortly after Pan Palace Plaza (where Sunshine Lip Sin is located).

Set A (Rm 3.30) with Shrimps, Pork Meat, Egg and Kangkung/ Water Spinach

We were impressed with the generosity of Granny's, just take a look at the Pork Lards atop of the noodles. The original order does not come with Lards, they will be given only by request (free of charge). Our bowl of Hokkien Mee came in with a crimson red hue, the Chili paste, however, can be added according to your personal preference (available on every table). The broth carries a sweet flavor from the crustacean with a hint of smokiness as a result of frying the Shrimp shells. However, the broth did not come in hot, it was at warm state which we were left underwhelmed. Authentic, aromatic, spicy and definitely toothsome; but not the best Hokkien Mee for me.

Set B (Rm 4.50) with Shrimps, Pork Meat, Egg, Pig's Heart and Kangkung/ Water Spinach

The Big Fat Hen @ Garden Inn, Anson Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Garden Inn (opposite to Methodist Girl School and KDU College Penang) welcomes a new cafe at the hotel lobby, The Big Fat Hen has three branches in the heartland of Georgetown; Garden Inn at Anson Road, G-Inn at Macalister Road and Chime Heritage (opening at the end of September). Interestingly, all three branches serve different menus- it is recommended that you visit G-Inn's for breakfast, Garden Inn's for light lunch and dinner at their dining house at Chime Heritage. For the business hours, kindly refer to their Facebook Page for more information. We visited their branch at Garden Inn, the place has the perfect setting and ambiance for friends to catch up; though seats are pretty limited. The menu is not too extensive either, but more than sufficient for a light lunch or casual meet ups with friends.

Basil Pesto and Egg Mayo Sandwich (Rm 10) was a recommendation by the hospitable staff. The portion is so big that this on its own would make an awesome light lunch. The Focaccia was lightly buttered but it was somewhat too dry to my liking; the filling, on the other hand, was toothsome. Egg Mayo with a blob of Basil Pesto atop of healthy greens (Cucumber, Tomato and Lettuce). The side was confusing though, a small serving portion of Tapioca Chips; the combo did not work as expected but the Focaccia Sandwich was decent and worth the value.

We figured out why Baileys Chocolate Cake is priced at a whopping price of Rm 16; the flavor of the Irish liqueur was somewhat strong while the thick layer of Chocolate and Cream Cheese contributed a moist, soft and creamy texture to the cake. It was not sweet at all, with a hint of saltiness (from the Cream Cheese frosting I presume) and bitter after-taste. A perfect cake to go with a cup of Joe.

It was not a wise decision to order their Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream (Rm 12). The pastry skin of the Pie was crumbly, thick, not buttery and hard to the bite. The filling, on the other hand, was okay with a unique touch of Cinnamon but my friends thought the filling was too sweet for them; even sweeter to go with the Vanilla Ice Cream and we could not even finish the entire dessert.

New Menu Launched at Coya (古雅) @ Lorong Selamat, Georgetown, Penang.

As the Nine Emperor Gods Festival hovers over the horizon, stalls selling a myriad of Vegetarian food will be mushrooming over the island. However, if you wish to find a place with a cozier ambiance and better setting, why not visit Coya (at Lorong Selamat)? The vegetarian restaurant launched its new menu recently, featuring some new dishes and some regulars' favorites. For more information on my last visit, you may hop over to read my previous blog entry here.

Many Thanks to Coya for hosting us.

Too beautiful to behold, we were impressed with the presentation of their new signature dish- Portobello Giant Mushroom Burger (Rm 49.90). Portobello Mushroom is well-known for its nutritious values and in this dish itself, two huge premium Portobello Mushrooms were used to sandwich Mock Ham, Mock Patty (made from Lion's Mane Mushroom), a sliver of Cheese and some fresh greens; sides were just-off-the-vine Tomatoes, blanched Broccoli and Cauliflower, boiled Potatoes, grilled Mushrooms and Salad; to go with their home-made Pineapple sauce. It was a pretty refreshing dish with plenty of healthy greens; the sauce was somewhat unique, sweet and fruity. My only complain was the Mock Patty, which has an odd texture. Two-day pre-order in advance is required for this dish.

Another creative variant to their Salad- Golden Pumpin Sour Plum (Rm 6.50), thinly sliced Pumpkin sitting on a raft of Greens drenched with their special Sour Plum dressing. Simple as it sounds, it was refreshing with sour, sweet and spicy notes (a result of mixing Bird's Eye Chilies to the dressing). Perfect to go as an appetizer.

For soup, we had White Tom Yum (Rm 8.50) with some Vege-Dumplings and Fried Bean Curd (Tofu Pok). It was a mistake to look down on the clear and seemingly harmless White Tom Yum; my palate was struck by a strong jolt of sourness followed by a heat. It was indeed, very refreshing and appetizing. I did not quite enjoy the dumplings on the other hand, I thought they were nothing out of the ordinary.

Tummy-filler was Curry Chicken Rice (Rm 12) which comes with Pickled Vegetables and crunchy Papadum. The Potatoes and Mock Chicken were well-cooked and reasonably flavored with Herbs and Spices but I did not find it outstanding though.

The dish that received greatest attention and spotlight was Green Pepper Bolognese Spaghetti (Rm 12.50/ Add on Rm 2 for a drink and dessert/ fruits). The dish carried a gentle heat due to the copious amount of Black Pepper added; the al-dente Spaghetti paired well with the sweet-sauce that has a hint of slightly-bitter Pepper flavor. Though the dish may sound very complicated, we found the taste to be easily accepted.

Comfort food of the day- Clay-pot Bak Kut Teh (Rm 12) was served to us piping hot. It was a real comfort to sip on this invigorating Chinese Herbal Soup especially on a rainy day. It consists of the quintessential flavors and reasonably salted; though not as good as those with meat; Coya's Bak Kut Teh has certainly lived up to my expectation.

Jack & Co @ Dato Keramat, Georgetown, Penang.

It is easy to miss Jack & Co, the first shipping container restaurant cum bar in Penang. Tucked within the shop houses along the bustling Dato Keramat Road, Jack & Co may be inconspicuous to many. The restaurant uses a modern-eco design; shipping containers, old tires on the wall and pallets are some of the solid evidences. Seats in the shipping container are very limited (by reservations only), guests are encouraged to sit at the al-freso pallet-furniture patio. The tables and chairs, however, are made of the flimsily stacked pallet tables; a good place for a drink but not for dining. Menu is rather limited as the restaurateur focuses on the alcohols while the prices are on the higher side. There were some hits and misses on our visit but since the place is very new and the menu is constantly changing; it is worth a second look. Jack & Co is located on Dato Keramat Road, facing Federal Cinema and the famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow.

A pretty odd name- Chicken Boneless (Rm 25) comes with a juicy slab of Chicken Thigh atop of Deep Fried Wedges, creamy Mushrooms and fresh Arugula/ Rocket salad (with Dried Cranberries). The Chicken was juicy and especially tender but it barely registered any flavors on its own. The side- Creamy Mushroom stole the spotlight. Shimeiji Mushrooms were used and as a result of that, the earthiness of the Mushrooms stood out and the cream sauce was gorgeous. The Rocket Salad was not shabby either, the dressing was somewhat sweet and it has a hint of alcohol infused within. Refreshing and toothsome on its own but even better to enjoy together with the Mushroom and Chicken as a whole. Albeit decent, I did not find it mind-blowingly good.

Sweet ending was a confused one. We were intrigued by the combination of Mango Basil Cheesecake (Rm 15) but we were muddled with the presentation. A dollop of whipped Cream Cheese was added on top of crushed Cookies and served with diced Mango, finished with Blueberries and julienned Basil. You need to scoop every single bit of it to fully enjoy the flavors. However, we did not like the peculiar acidic of the Cream Cheese which tasted somewhat like Yogurt. Also, unripe Mango was used and as a result of that, sweetness was being compromised and overshadowed by the disconcerting sourness. The only source of sweetness was the measly amount of crushed Cookies. The idea of infusing Basil into Mango Cheesecake was creative and refreshing but some refinement is definitely needed to the recipe. The price may be on the steeper side for that portion.

A slightly better option will be Apple Crumble (Rm 15), a generous amount of caramelized Apple and a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream sitting on a lake of biscuit-crumb, garnished with Mint Leaves and Strawberries; completed with squiggles of Chocolate sauce. Inevitably sweet but I enjoyed the crumb which has a hint of ginger-herbs infused within and the caramelized Apple was nicely done, with a discernible Cinnamon flavor.

The thought of seeking a good place that serves a wide range of seafood (in Penang) to satiate my craving has been a daunting task for me; fortunately, I can have my cravings fixed at Sarkies. Sarkies of Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang is pleased to offer buffet fanatics a new sturdy range of buffet spread. Plethora of carefully chosen stupendous dishes will be offered. The management has tweaked the menu a little and as a result of that, a more extensive menu is up.

Many thanks to E&O Hotel Penang for hosting us.

Seafood Extravaganza: (the buffet promotion is expected to run until the end of October 2014)

7 pm to 10: 30 pm, every Wednesday to Saturday.

Rm 110++ (Adult), Rm 48++ (Children)

Many Thanks to E&O Hotel Penang for hosting us on that evening.

Yabbies/ Crayfish and Oysters

Tuna and Salmon Sashimi

Snow Crabs

Aplenty seafood available in the buffet spread to match with the buffet theme- Seafood Extravaganza. Snow Crabs, Crayfish, Oysters, Prawns and Mussels are some of the seafood that are worth looking forward to.

Grilled Unagi

Tuna Tataki

Tako Sushi

Egg Salad

Baby Octopus Salad

Cheese Platter

Prawn Cocktail in Glass

Ebi Sushi

Grilled Unagi lovers will be delighted to know that Grilled Unagi is now available too, it was lip-smacking as expected but it could be better with the sweet Unagi Tare sauce. Equally delicious is the Tuna Tataki, perfectly seared with a soft and pink hue in the middle; perfect to go on its own or with a touch of refreshing Lemon Juice. Another serendipitous find on the Cheese Platter, a Garlic infused Soft Cheese which possesses a garlicky flavor followed by a smooth and cheesy texture, making it an ideal spread with the hotel's Soft Rolls.

Fried Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce

Squid Curry

Steamed Cabbage Rolls with Egg White Sauce

Black Pepper Chicken

Stir Fried Crabs with Special Sauce

Lamb Stew

Butter Oat Prawns

Sweet and Sour Chicken

Frittata

Chef Martin added a local touch to the main dishes of the buffet spread by serving a few of the locals' favorite dishes. Black Pepper Chicken was one of the dishes that left me a very deep impression. It was deftly seasoned and beautifully cooked; the meat was tender but the real draw of the dish was the sauce, peppery, delicately salted and it has the right consistency to my liking (not too watery or starchy). Also not to be missed will be the Squid Curry. Do not be fooled by the unappealing and unpromising look of the dish, it was robust with flavors, hitting the palate with a mild chili kick. A perfect dish to spoon over rice. Excitement strikes when we noticed Frittata was being offered; the Italian Egg dish impressed us with its airy, soft and fluffy texture with a buttery-flaky thin pastry skin; as light as cotton and as delicious as a dream.

Grilled Steaks, Lamb Chops, Chicken Satays, Assorted Sausages, Japanese Saba Fish, Tempura, Baked Oysters with Cheese, Seafood Chowder, Pumpkin Cream Soup with Croutons, Pasta, Japanese Teppanyaki, Penang Char Koay Teow and Roast Duck are some of the dishes that diners can look forward to, particularly in this buffet theme.

Profiteroles

Chocolate Mousse topped with Marshmallows

Assorted Doughnuts

Mille Feuille

Assorted Fruits- Seedless Grapes and Strawberries

Dragon-fruit

Stalwart dessert fans will go "gaga" over their dessert spread. Be spoilt for choices as the spread  will be teeming with a wide selection of dessert choices. You will regret for not trying their Profiteroles; albeit the outer layer of the pastry puff was slightly harden, the inner filling of the Profiteroles was soft and creamy while the caramelized outer layer provides a gentle sweetness to the puff. It was not sweet at all, just the way I like. Chocolate devotees could try their Chocolate Mousse, unbelievably smooth and Chocolaty, with a perfectly balanced sweetness. The Mille Feuille, on the other hand, did not impress us with its biscuit-like pastry. Other desserts that may be served are Black Forest Cake, Pistachio Creme Brulee, American Carrot Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Pistachio Financier etc.

Many thanks to E&O Hotel's Executive Chef- Chef Martin Becquart and his culinary team for preparing the wonderful buffet spread.

Steamboat Haven (炉圣) @ Fettes Park, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

The Penang Food Hunter (PFH) Facebook Group is a voluntary initiative started by a few food enthusiasts, the group has more than 60, 000 members at present. Members of the PFH group can enjoy discounts at participating restaurants in Penang. Steamboat Haven was one of the many places introduced by the members and part of the long participating merchant list. Opened for just a couple months, the place has garnered an appreciate following and proven to be a popular family dining place for the nearby residents. We were not surprised- the good quality fresh ingredients, wallet-friendly prices and consistently attentive service could provide an explanation to this. Advanced reservation is recommended should you have plans on visiting the place on weekends. Steamboat Haven is located along Fettes Road, right beside Magnum bet station and opposite to Prima Tanjung.

Sets are recommended for your first visit. We picked Set B (for 3-4 pax) at Rm 88; only one type of soup base is available in Steamboat Haven. Do not expect avalanche of flavors in the soup, but rather, a comfortingly simple and traditional clear soup, with a hint of appetizing acidic tilt from the brilliantly used Sour Plum. Flavors from the Fish and Yam were fully accentuated, hunks of Deep Fried Fish can be found within the soup, as well as some Yam and Cabbage. Chopped Cilantro/ Parsley will be added to the soup as a final touch, do make a note if you are not a fan of Cilantro and they will not have them added to the soup.

Set B (Rm 88) includes:
  • Fried Grouper Fish Head
  • Grouper Fish Fillet
  • Fresh Prawns
  • Cuttlefish
  • Home-made Fish Balls
  • Meat Balls
  • Sliced Pork Belly
  • Cod Fish Dumplings
  • Jelly Fish
  • Enoki Mushrooms
  • Beancurd Skin
  • Vermicelli Noodles *4 portions, you may request to have them changed to Instant Noodles or other available options, kindly inquire within*

The ingredients were pleasingly fresh, the pristine white Fish Fillet spoke for itself. We did not like the home-made Fish Balls though, the texture was somewhat softer and less-bouncier as compared to those mass-produced ones but they were certainly a lovely addition to the spread. The very friendly owner informed us that we could have any ingredients changed and they will replace us with something else. Add-ons are available at additional costs. The Rm 88 Set B was more than enough for the three of us (adults), though may not be the case for four person. You can always have some extra orders on the ala-carte dishes nevertheless.

If I had to nitpick, it will be their choices of complementing dips. I thought they could have more choices though, none of the Chili sauce/ paste could satisfy my needs. They were not spicy enough. More "oomph" is needed.

Dou Houz (豆号馆) @ Noordin Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Penang has no shortage of restaurants or cafes that serve good Vegetarian food but Dou Houz is definitely a delightful addition to the Vegetarian food scene in the state. Dou Houz (豆号馆) is a recently opened Home-stay cum cafe, the place serves very simple menu- 3 types of Pizza and a Cold Noodle-dish. No other choices but they do have aplenty of drinks; their home-made Enzymes are worth-trying. The absence of air-conditioners may be frustrating for the heat-intolerant but their warm hospitality, lip-smacking dishes at unbeatable prices are some valid reasons to check out the place. Dou Houz is located at Noordin Road, a stone's throw distance away from Gama Supermarket and Hock Lok Siew Confectionery.

We were very impressed with Dou Houz's Mushroom Pizza (Rm 8) which has its own unique touch. The magical mix of Shimeiji Mushrooms, Onions and fresh Thai Basil was absolutely brilliant. Sink your teeth into the Pizza and you will be greeted by the unique aroma of Thai Basil followed by a hint of earthiness of the Mushrooms and lastly, the savory Cheesy flavor. Crunchy, Cheesy, palatable and aromatic; Dou Houz's Mushroom Pizza had every box ticked.

A refreshing yet healthier option- Dou Houz Cold Noodles served with Goma/ Japanese Sesame Sauce (Rm 8) is a perfect dish to counter the sweltering tropical heat. Julienned Omelette, Black Fungus, Cucumber, Fried Bean Curd and Carrots served on a raft of well-cooked Spaghetti and doused with Goma Sauce. The simplicity of the combination between the crunchy greens and al-dente Spaghetti turns into an amiable and toothsome dish. The Goma Sauce carried a gentle sweetness which worked perfectly well with the juicy crunch of vegetables. This on its own would make a wonderful light lunch.

Another ingenious creation- Chocolate Banana Pizza (Rm 8 with a scoop of Ice Cream Rm 1); unlike the usual Chocolate Banana Pizza I had, Dou Houz's comes with Cheeses! We were confused with the combination in the beginning but was later convinced by the sweet and savory combination. Thin crust Pizza base, aplenty of Cheeses atop of Banana slices; completed with sprinkles of crushed Peanuts and squiggles of Chocolate Syrup, jeweled with a scoop of icy cold Mango Ice Cream. You will be amazed by how Chocolate, Banana and Cheese dovetailing with each other while the saltiness of the Cheeses manages to reduce the sweetness of the Ice Cream and Chocolate syrup; further enhanced by the contrast in Hot (Pizza) and Cold (Ice Cream) combination. A very impressive dessert I must say.

Hameediyah Restaurant @ Campbell Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Some fans of Hameediyah claimed that the flavors of the spices have tamed over the years but everyone would have to agree that Hameediyah is still one of the best places to enjoy a plate of authentic Penang Nasi Kandar. The 107-year old well-known Indian Muslim restaurant has recently revamped its menu and refurbished the restaurant, giving the public and regular patrons a fresh impression. The new strategy seeks to defy the conventional thinking of Nasi Kandar eateries being unhygienic and unpresentable and Hameediyah is proud to prove that they have done it. The walkway is clear, the toilet is clean, the dining hall is air-conditioned and the servers are friendly. However, the restaurant does not have plans on compromising the flavors; on the contrary, they are bringing back some dishes that have vanished over the years; explained by the management of Hameediyah. Diners can now enjoy the mouth-watering dishes of the yesteryears in a more comfortable and cleaner environment. On a side note, their extended outlet- Hameediyah Tandoori House is few doors away and is especially suitable to accommodate larger groups.

Many Thanks to Hameediyah for hosting us that evening.

The quintessential signature dish at Hameediyah- Chicken Murtabak (Rm 5 each); we were delighted to know that Hameediyah is still putting effort in preserving the traditional way of cooking Murtabak. Traditional Murtabaks have an additional layer of Roti Canai-like bread stuffed in the middle. As a result of that, the Murtabak is thicker, chewier and offers a more satisfying and enticing combo of textures. The accompanying Lentil sauce was beautifully cooked either; not only Potatoes but Aubergines were added too. It has the right thickness and flavors; not the watery type. No lackluster, Hameediyah still offers pickled Onions; while many businesses have discontinued the pickled Onions; Hameediyah thought that the Onions play an essential role to complement the Indian-Muslim stuffed pancake.

Albeit the Briyani Rice (Rm 3/ portion) did not fare well in texture (clumpy), it surprised me with its robust flavors; in a positive way of course. It was deftly seasoned and skillfully cooked with a remarkable depth of flavors. The management shared one of its secrets to us. A small amount of Saffron is needed to get the right flavors. The rice is perfect to go with some curries.

One of my favorite side dishes (for Nasi Kandar) will be Kerabu Nanas (Rm 1/ person). Unlike the usual ones I had, Hameediyah's had a splash of their secret Curry sauce. The effects were not apparent but we enjoyed the Kerabu for being crunchy, juicy and especially appetizing.

A delightful addition to your plate of Nasi Kandar-goodness; Hameediyah's Fried Fish (Rm 4.50) was not mind-blowingly good but we enjoyed the pristine white flesh with firm texture. It was well-marinated with a discernible aroma of Turmeric.

A suggested combination- the sauce from Beef Rendang (Rm 2.50/ portion) paired well with the Fish Head Curry sauce. Not only does it work well with that, we thought the Beef Rendang works pretty well with Roti Canai as well. Luck is needed here; I get to sample two pieces of Beef Rendang in which one of them was fork-tenderly soft while the other one was rubbery hard to the bite. I guess picking the cuts plays an important role here.

Also not to be missed will be their gigantic Prawn Curry (Rm 7- 12 by size). How could the curry fare badly when the seafood-sweetness has imbued within? The Prawn, on the other hand, was toothsome. It was fresh, succulent and not rubbery. Another perfect condiment for Roti Canai.

Chicken Kapitan (Rm 5.50/ portion) did not leave me a very strong impression. The curry was alright, packed with the essential flavors from the Herbs and Spices but the meat was a little rough. Probably Chicken Thigh will give a smoother and more tender texture.

The star attraction of the evening has got to be this Fish Head Curry (Rm 60/ pot); good enough for 4 diners, we enjoyed the Curry for being thick, rich and flavorful with a gentle Chili kick. The flesh, on other hand, was firm and it did not possess a peculiar fishy taste. We tucked in the pot as though we were hunting for treasures; it excites us like a child! We were more than happy to find Aubergines, Okras and Tomatoes inside. Absolutely lovely and especially delectable!

Dubu Dubu Seoul Food @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

The month of August welcomes another well-known Korean restaurant- Dubu Dubu Seoul Food. The brand has a few branches in Malaysia; most of them are in KL, the one at Gurney Paragon is the first branch in Penang. As the name of the restaurant would imply, the place serves Korean food; however, we thought the dishes we had were not very "Korean" and more like ordinary Chinese Stir Fry dishes instead. Authentic? Arguable. Nevertheless, we wondered if the meal did not go well as we did not order the correct dishes or the fact that they have yet to stabilize their business operations since they are still new. Nonetheless, it is worth a second look to check on their improvements, probably a couple months later. Dubu Dubu Seoul Food is located on the Lower Ground floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, right beside 600 CC and Daiso.

Kimchi Beef Gogi Set (Rm 18.90) comes with 3 side dishes and a bowl of soup. Unlike most Korean restaurants, Dubu Dubu Seoul Food serves Purple Rice (or known as Black Rice); the sides were okay. We like the Kimchi for being crunchy and perfectly balanced in sweetness and acidity. The soup, on the other hand, was ridiculous. It was served to us at room temperature, not to mention that it was bland, as though we were drinking some sort of eggy beverage. The real disappointment was the main. It was over-seasoned and salted, though the Rice was able to tone-down the saltiness, we still struggled to finish the dish.

It was ironic that the Bulgogi Chicken Udon (Rm 16.90- Set) barely registered any taste. The soup was rather bland and the noodles were nothing out of the ordinary (authentic Udon noodles should be al-dente and no, Dubu Dubu's were soft). Probably I was expecting more from them (considering they are such a huge establishment) but it turned out to be another disappointment. Fortunately, they were generous in serving the Chicken (though the Chicken did not live up to my expectation as Bulgogi meat).

St. Presso @ Elit Avenue, Bayan Baru, Penang.

The new commercial building (Elit Avenue) near Sunway Tunas at Bayan Baru area has finally opened to the public and amongst the new establishments, St. Presso is a worth-mentioning one. The newly opened cafe takes on a rather simple but cozy and spacious setting. It does not have any eye-catching mural paints or funky furniture but rather, comfortable couches and ordinary wooden chairs. Foods were pretty standard-average on our visit but St. Presso is definitely one of the few cafes that exudes the warmth of home (at least for me). A good place to drop by for your caffeine fix or to grab a sandwich for your light lunch. Elit Avenue can be found opposite to the traffic light before turning into Sunway Tunas; or directly opposite to Pantai Hospital and Giant Hypermarket at Bayan Baru.

Sauteed Oyster Mushrooms Sandwich (Rm 13.50) with a side. Ciabatta bread was used and it was lightly buttered then toasted to a crisp. It was slightly dry to my liking but the filling was somewhat impressive. St. Presso sauteed the mushrooms with minimal amount of seasonings, with a dash of Thyme and generous amount of Onions for the crunchy bite and vege-sweetness. The earthiness of the Oyster Mushrooms stands out. A delectable snack to munch on or a light meal on its own. The side, however, was disappointingly average. It was ordinary fresh greens with Onions doused with Mayonnaise.

Their Apple Strudel (Rm 2.50) came in an unusual shape than what I was expecting; certainly not those that I've seen in Australia. The pastry skin was a tad thick and hard in texture to my liking; although the filling was okay (not too sweet) but I did not seem to enjoy it. Also, I had a hard time cutting through the pastry.

A complimentary Vanilla Chocolate Twist (selling for Rm 5) from the restaurateur. Similarly, the pastry skin was a tad dry and hard but the flavor was okay. It was not too sweet and heavy. However, this may not be a good choice for you if you are seeking for something Chocolaty or buttery as the flavor may be a little thin.

Green Tea Croissant

Pain Au Chocolate

Breakfast Danish

Good food always delight our days and a good breakfast is especially important to kick start the day. We glad we had ours that morning; their Green Tea Croissant was lip-smacking! It was flaky, crunchy with a mellow delicate green tea flavor gradually kicks in. Just good enough on its own but additional butter and jam can be provided to you upon request. Equally toothsome was the Breakfast Danish, perfectly crafted puff stuffed with velvety smooth Custard Cream and jeweled with glazed Fruits. The sweetness was perfectly calibrated; flaky, crunchy, creamily smooth with sweet and sour burst of juices from the fruits. I can't think of any reasons for not loving it. Pain Au Chocolate, on the other hand, paled when in comparison with the aforementioned items. It was flaky with a generous amount of Chocolate oozing out but the overall taste did not stand out; pretty standard-average. A good choice for chocolate lovers nevertheless.

Maize Bread (Rm 12++)

Pistachio Blueberry Mousse (Rm 12++)

Chocolate Dome (Rm 12++)
