Kwong Sang House (廣生洋服) @ Leith Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Kwong Sang House (廣生洋服), a quaint themed restaurant which uses "tailor" as the theme for this restaurant. With some funky and quirky garments displayed and tailor tools adorned the walls; every single corner of this place has a photograph opportunity. Kwong Sang House serves Western food mainly- Pizza, Pasta and some Mains (only Chicken and Fish dishes) and all the dishes are reasonably priced. However, for some unknown reasons, Pizzas were not available during my visit and only certain types of Pasta dishes were available. The place tends to be thronged with crowd during weekends and seats are limited; with not more than 6 tables in total, diners are advised to make advance reservation to avoid disappointment.

Prawn Aglio Olio (Rm 16.90) and Asparagus Salmon (Rm 18.90) were the only 2 types of Pasta dishes available that day. I had Prawn Aglio Olio (Rm 16.90) instead of the latter one, the dish comes with 3 huge, fresh and succulent Prawns; heavily sprinkled with Italian Herbs. No doubt the Italian Herbs creates an alluring aroma but the Italian Herbs were slightly over-powering for me. Moreover, the Olives seem to be on the salty side on its own but work perfectly with the pasta. Fortunately, the  adequately sauteed pasta was cooked al-dente and reasonably seasoned, with a gentle heat from the Chili Flakes. Overall, this dish was good but not mind-blowing.

Another noteworthy choice would be their Fish in Oven (Rm 15.90) where the Fish fillet will be baked and served with Lemon Cream Cheese Sauce, further enlivened with a drench of some Blueberry/ Raspberry Jam for the hint of sweetness; placed elegantly on a bed of Mashed Potato. This well-executed dish comes with some fresh greens as side. I was thinking if this dish could be monotonous if one person were to finish it entirely but I was wrong, the cream was a well-balanced one; together with the lightly battered Fish fillet, it was lip-smacking. However, the Mashed Potato did not quite impress me though, it was way too buttery and heavy to my liking.

Iced Lemon Tea (Rm 4.90)

Chanced upon this newly opened restaurant on my friend's blog. Wanton Mee/ Noodles never failed to attract me as I am a huge fan of the noodles. BBee Park at The One Terrace Plus (right beside Green Island Western Food) specializes in offering Wanton Noodles which explains why their menu is not that extensive. There is a sense of simplicity without unnecessary frills for the decor. While the prices are reasonable in Penang's context, the serving portion was rather small and might be insufficient for some. However, the dishes we had were decent but not mind-blowing......

Recommended by the waitress- Special Wanton Mee (特色云吞面,Rm 5.90/ set; Rm3.90 for ala-carte) is one of their signature dishes. All noodles were made by themselves and they have some proven good sales record in Sungai Petani. Intrigued by the way they served the noodles, I couldn't wait to unwrap the packet. It comes with some Char Siew (Roasted Barbecue Pork), Chicken slices and a couple of Dumplings. The noodles were slightly under-seasoned and lack of a "kick" in my opinion. It carried a hint of sweetness but it was slightly too mild to my liking, as though something is missing. Fortunately, the noodles were well-executed, maintaining the right texture- springy and bouncy/ al-dente to my liking. Overall, it was decent but not-out-the-world good, I've had something better before.

While the other Dry version of their Wanton Mee (干捞云吞面,Rm 7.90/ set; Rm 6.90 for ala-carte) gives the standard satisfaction to us. I was caught in a whiff of aroma from the Pork Lards and I was right, this Dry version of theirs was heavily drenched with Pork Lards. Using the same noodles as above, the noodles were bouncy and springy. However, my friend thought the noodles were slightly too oily for him. Praise the Lards? Not too sure about you but not for me.

This enticing Curry Chicken Rice (咖哩鸡饭,Rm 10.90/ set; Rm 9.90 for ala-carte) comes with a whole Chicken Thigh and a bowl of piping hot Rice. The curry consists of two different types of curries- Rendang and Creamy Curry (with Coconut Milk). The mixed curry sauce exudes harmonious flavors and makes a lovely accompaniment to the rice. While the curries left some impressionable quality, I could not agree with the way they prepared the Chicken- Deep Fried Chicken Thigh. It could be the crispy and crunchy texture that they are aiming for. Fortunately, the Chicken was well-cooked and it manages to lock moisture within. At least my friend seemed to enjoy the dish thoroughly.

Each set comes with a complimentary Herbal Tea (Hot or Cold) and a choice of Wanton/ Dumplings (Soup OR Deep Fried version) OR Blanched Vegetables doused with Garlic Oil.

While the dish Deep Fried Golden Tofu (“自制酱”黄金豆腐,Rm 8.90 for 8 pieces) was not a scene-stealer, we were not disappoint with the taste. Beautifully and perfectly deep fried Tofu dressed with their home-made Cheesy-Mayonnaise sauce which carries a hint of sweetness. The soul of this dish lies at the sauce, which engendered the crispy Tofu. I was amazed by the strong soy-aroma within the Tofu, not too sure if they made the Tofu themselves though.

Wheat Connection Bakery @ The One Terrace Plus, Bayan Baru, Penang.

Chanced upon this unpretentious and quiet little bakery at the newly emerged shop houses at The One, Bayan Lepas. Manning by Chef Nazeri, Wheat Connection Bakery has an impressive and extensive range of French Pastries, Bread, Confectioneries, Cakes to offer. Prices are reasonable and wallet-friendly, this is definitely a place to look for especially for those with a sweet tooth. Honing his culinary arts for many years, Chef Nazeri is an experienced Pastry Chef and down to earth person. I am impressed with the choices of desserts and pastries available in his bakery, some of the notable ones are Creme Brulee, Financier, Eclair, Sourdough Bread, Macaroons just to name a few. The bakery deserves a better recognition from the public. While not every single item in the bakery is as impressive as it seems, do try some of the Chef's recommendations out and I personally recommend their Panna Cotta. I would love to make a second visit for their Creme Brulee too.

I have never tried any Financier before, hence, I've decided to land for their Noisette Financier (Rm 3.50), topped with unsweetened Hazelnut Jam and Almond. The light and moist Financier was more to the sweeter side, no doubt the creamy and rich Hazelnut Jam was able to amp the flavor but it lacked of an "X" factor in my opinion. However, the edges of the Financier was perfectly baked and crisp to my liking. Not a bad choice for afternoon tea I guess.

Chocolate Truffle (Rm 8.50) is something shall not be missed by Chocolate lovers. This cup of dark, rich, creamy and smooth Chocolate will take your tongue to every corner, making a paradise within your mouth. Being a not-so-chocolate-person, the chocolate-flavor was so intense that I can hardly withstand. No it was not sweet, in fact, it leaves a bitter-note on your palates. As you dig in further, you will be surprised with a pearl-like Chocolate-Truffle which can be the best thing to melt in your mouth! However, I thought this dessert lacked of depth and can be monotonous if a person were to savor it entirely on his/her own.

I was especially enamored for this wobbly Panna Cotta (Rm 8.50), it was gloriously good. It comes with a generous amount of topping- Mixed Berries. This delicate and well-chilled Panna Cotta is definitely a noteworthy choice for your sweet-indulgence. It possesses a very strong Vanilla flavor which I was told by the Chef that they have been using Vanilla Beans instead of Vanilla Essence; well, the difference can be rather obvious, is it not? The Vanilla flavor was so intense that it lingers in the tongue and the best part was, it was not too sweet, just the way I like.

Do not harbor high expectations on their Portuguese Tart (Rm 1.50 each), probably it was out of the oven for quite some time, it was not as crisp and warm the way I like. Despite the fact that Chef has taken the effort to heat it up for us but it was not the same anymore. However, the flavor and sweetness being perfectly alright, it could be the timing that matters. I reckon it should be good only if the tart is fresh from the oven.

Ye Wei Vietnamese Food (越味小吃馆) @ Transfer Road, Penang.

As Vietnamese Food is rather dearth in Penang, finding an authentic yet good Vietnamese eatery is never easy; having tasted Ye Wei Vietnamese Food (越味小吃馆), I just know where to find myself some authentic yet inexpensive Vietnamese food. Rest-assured for the authenticness as this unpretentious and unshowy coffee house is manned by a Vietnamese couple; quintessential dishes for Vietnamese eats such as Pho, Spring Rolls, Vietnamese Coffee are all available here. It should be quite easy to locate Ye Wei, it can be seen at the T-junction of Transfer Road and Dickens Street (the coffee house is situated at Transfer Road but facing the T junction intersecting Dickens Street). Prices are considered cheap and reasonable in Penang's context, however, the lack of air-conditioning can be unpleasant for the heat-intolerant. Nevertheless, this is the place that you should visit if you are looking for some authentic, cheap and good Vietnamese food.

I was especially enamored for these healthy yet delectable Gỏi Cuốn/ Vietnamese Spring Rolls (虾+肉越式薄饼,5 for Rm 10). Beautifully wrapped with some fresh greens, Vermicelli Noodles (Bee Hoon), Spring Onions, Shrimps and Roasted Pork, these Spring Rolls go well with their tangy and appetizing Fish-sauce dip, which completed the dish perfectly with its sweet, sour and salty notes.

As their Pho will only be available on every Saturday, Bún Mang Vit/ Duck and Bamboo Shoot Noodles (越式鸭汤米粉,Rm 7) was the only noodle dish available during my visit. I caught in a whiff of a rather peculiar smell when it was served- it was the smell of Bamboo Shoots. The savory clear Duck broth was abundant flavorsome, fortunately, the exotic smell from the Bamboo Shoots was rather mild. Sprouts, shredded Water Spinach, Duck Giblets and Duck meat, as well as Coriander can be found in this hearty bowl of noodles. I thought the dish was just mediocre.

Complimentary fresh Lime will be provided to amp up the flavors of your dishes, as well as their fiery hot Vietnamese Chili Sauce. It was so hot and spicy that caught my tongue burning, kids or those with low hot/ spicy-endurance should handle with care.

As for desserts, I had their Bánh Flan/ Vietnamese Custard Pudding (果馅饼,Rm 3.50) which everyone raves about. The wobbly Custard Pudding was covered with Ice cubes and doused with some thick and unsweetened Vietnamese Coffee. One scoop of this dessert and my eyes widen, the thick Coffee has certainly awaken my taste buds, accompanied by the chilled Custard Pudding. The combination was not sweet nor bitter, just perfectly nice to my liking. A slipshod for the preparation was the adding of Ice cubes, which diluted the flavors of the dessert and I thought the texture of the Pudding could be smoother too.

Another note-worthy choice for desserts will be their Rau Câu Dừa/ Vietnamese Jello (海藻椰子糖水,Rm 3.50) which comes with quite a number of fascinating ingredients. It has some Vietnamese Seaweed Agar-agar (Both Green and Black version), White Fungus, Barley, Longan, some Shaved Ice as well as some Syrup. While the dessert was not mind-blowing, it provides a pleasingly comforting end to the meal.

Sauerkraut, Pork Knuckle and Beer are the quintessential dishes when one mentions about German cuisine and being a Halal restaurant, Swez Brasserie serves No Pork. However, we were fortunate enough to be served with their German Sauerkraut Salad (德式酸菜沙拉). While traditional German Sauerkraut Salad comes with some Bacon bits, Chef Vince was creative enough to substitute Bacon with Turkey Bacon. Despite some honey has been added to balance the sourness of the vinegar, the dish was still slightly sour as a starter. Nevertheless, it makes a perfect combination with the Bratwurst/ German Sausages.

While this dish Kartoffelsalat/ German Potato Salad (德式马铃薯沙拉) was not a scene-stealer, it did not disappoint me with its impressionable flavors. The perfectly-cooked Potatoes were well-coated with Sour Cream and tossed with Turkey Bacon bits, Capers, Olives and Cherry Tomatoes.

Beef Stew will never go out of fashion, this enticing Rindergulasch/ Beef Goulash Soup (德式烩牛肉汤) was subtle and robust in flavors. A medley of sweet and sour notes with a slight smoky flavor exudes slowly after you had a sip on the soup, further enlivened with their braised till fork-tender bite-sized Beef cubes, as well as some Onions and Capsicum. My only gripe was the lack of a well-toasted Baguette or Sourdough to complement with the soup....

I did not seem to enjoy their Haselnuss-Kruste Fische/ Hazelnut Crusted Fish (榛子脆皮鱼), a slab of fish was fried with a layer of Hazelnut crust (Lemon Zest was being added) and the dish was served with a dollop of Sour Cream. The crust being too flaky and crumbly, it did not seem to possess a very significant flavor nor effect to the dish in my opinion.

Meat lovers can satiate your cravings over their Sausages. Available in 5 flavors, one of the main highlights of this themed buffet will be the Bratwurst/ German Sausages (德国香肠); the available flavors are Garlic, Foot Long, Smoked Beef, Chicken as well as Beef Bratwurst. Their meticulously prepared sauces- Currywurst and French Mustard complete the dish with just the right extra kick.

One can easily find any Chicken Schnitzel at any German eateries and it makes no exception at Swez Brasserie. Their Rahm-Schnitzel/ Chicken Cutlet (德式鸡扒) was served with their home-made sauce which consists of Onions, Turkey Bacon as well as Chicken Broth. I adore the sauce being flavorsome but I did not quite enjoy the Chicken as it was slightly too dry and lack of texture in my opinion. Probably it took them too long to serve to us. Not a huge fan of this dish anyway.

Intrigued by its appearance, we were told by Chef that these are their Kartoffelpuffer/ Potato Pancake (马铃薯煎饼) where shredded Potatoes will be mixed with their batter. The shaped Pancake will then be baked and pan fried to ensure they possess the right texture. The Pancakes were good but even better if they were to be able to mix with some shredded Cheese. I see no surprises in this dish.

Deutsch Stil Grüne Bohnen/ German Style Green Beans (德式青豆) was a lackluster dish, the Beans were being sauteed with Onions and Turkey Beans but to my dismal, I thought the Beans were over-cooked and the dish was slightly too oily to my liking. I have no complaints for the taste anyway.

Hitting the top notch was their dessert- Bavarian Apple Strudel (巴伐利亚苹果馅饼), served with Vanilla sauce. This dessert seems to resonate among the guests, their Vanilla sauce was well-executed with the perfect sweetness and possesses strong flavor of Vanilla. As told by Chef, Vanilla Seeds were added instead of Essence which explains why the sauce was so delectable. A slipshod for this dessert was the texture of the pastry skin, it was too rough. We had a hard time in separating the dessert. Nevertheless, the stuffing was great and the flavors as well as sweetness were adequately balanced. A perfect dessert to end the meal.

Beignet/ German Deep-Fried Choux Pastry (德式香脆果子馅饼) is somewhat similar to Spanish Churros, and Mascarpone Cheese will be stuffed inside the Beignet. However, to my dismal, the Beignet was no longer crispy and I thought this dessert was just mediocre.

All these mouth-watering dishes were prepared and supervised by Vince Tan (Left, Demi Chef of Eastin Hotel Penang) and Kelvin Cheong (Right, Junior Sous Chef of Eastin Hotel Penang).

Brew Thirty Two Coffee House @ Green Hall, Penang.

Chanced upon this place during my previous visit to Kaffa Espresso Bar , situated at Green Hall, finding a place to park your car can be a real headache especially during office hours. As the name of the coffee house suggested, Brew Thirty Two Coffee House specializes in brewing coffee, as well as serving some cakes and pastries. On top of the usual cakes, they do serve some mains too, although the menu is not that extensive. However, the kitchen was down for renovation during my visit, it was a regret that I couldn't try some of their mains. I was told by one of my friends that the service was bad when she visited this place a couple weeks back (on a weekend) but it was perfectly okay during my visit. We didn't wait too long until our foods were served. The decor is a glam casualness; it's the harmonious yet cozy ambiance makes this a perfect place for gatherings and get-together. Prices are reasonable considering there are no taxes nor surcharges.

I was delighted to see this Rum & Raisins Crepe Cake (Alcoholic- Rm 11.90); intrigued by its flavor, we've decided to give it a try. The enticing Cake was beautifully layered with some Raisins; as you sink your fangs deeper into the Cake, you will be welcomed by the strong aroma of Rum, awakening your taste buds. It was light and not creamy at all. One of my friends thought it was more to the sweeter side due to the Raisins but it was perfectly okay for me. One slipshod about the preparation was the Cake was not well-chilled, the texture was way too soft to our liking.

We get to try another uncommon flavor too- Bamboo Crepe Cake (Rm 11.90). This is definitely a noteworthy choice, the unique and tangy flavor of Bamboo was well-blended with the Cream, exuding a new yet harmonious flavor. It tasted somewhat like Hokkaido Crepe Cake I had at  Moustache Houze. It was not as sweet as Rum & Raisins though, a must-try item for those who adore the flavors of Bamboo. However, my gripe was the lack-of-bite texture, as it was creamier, the cake possessed a softer texture; too soft as though it was melting, the cake collapses before we could even finish it. Well, I guess they are still new, hopefully they get to rectify this problem and improve on the texture.

Ban Chien Kueh/ Peanut Pancakes @ Air Itam, Penang.

One could easily overlook this humble little stall manned by an aged uncle here at Jalan Kampung Pisang, Air Itam. It sells Peanut Pancakes, or commonly known as "Ban Chien Kueh" by the locals, the uncle uses charcoal as the fuel which could really brings out the flavors. It should be quite eye-catching as this stall is always packed with patrons, waiting patiently for their orders to be done. The uncle insists to increase the selling price albeit the fast escalating cost of living expenses; I was shocked to find out that each substantial piece of Ban Chien Kueh is selling at Rm 0.80. However, please be sure that you are not in rush for any events as you are expected to wait patiently. It has been here for few decades according to some locals which suggests that Penang has many hidden gems yet to be discovered. Well, serendipitous finds are always the best, no?

This warm and crunchy Ban Chien Kueh was delicious, generously filled with crushed Peanuts and Corn-Custard, as well as a touch of sugar. However, the over-sprinkling of sugar ended slightly too sweet for my palates. Unlike ordinary Ban Chien Kueh, this version has thicker and fluffier base with a crunchy side. I just love how the ingredients amalgamated together, it was a pleasingly comfort local delicacy that you can't find elsewhere. Every bit of it was a joy to eat. However, the Ban Chien Kueh is best eaten warm.

Musical Soirée @ 1885, Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel Penang.

*Updated: The next Musical Soirée will be coming to you real soon on 7th of November 2013; for more information, kindly refer to here.*

October 3rd, 2013 marked another grand milestone for Eastern & Oriental Hotel, one of the most prestigious hotels in Penang for successfully organizing a Musical Soirée at its swanky and elegant fine dining restaurant- 1885. Priced at Rm 200++ per person, guests were served with some of their carefully crafted and stupendous dishes, accompanied with symphonic and soul-reaching music; it was indeed, a memorable night for the guests. The musical performance was led by three talented musicians- Zhang Chi, Teresa Ong and Sean Ooi. It was my honor to be invited as the media to cover the event.

Many thanks to Ms. Eileen Chong (Communications and Public Relations Manager of E&O Hotel Penang), Mr. Jaya (F&B Director of E&O Hotel Penang), Mr. Harold Rainfroy (Resident Manager of E&O Hotel Penang) and Mr. & Mrs. Martin Rutherford for extending the invitation.

Hokkaido Scallop Tataki served with Citrus Mango Salsa

Foie Gras Terrine with Cinnamon Brioche

Vichyssoise completed with Norwegian Salmon Tartar

Our dinner kick started with all these beautifully presented appetizers. Trio Appetizers- Hokkaido Scallop Tataki served with Citrus Mango Salsa, Foie Gras Terrine with Cinnamon Brioche and Vichyssoise completed with Norwegian Salmon Tartar. The gigantic Scallop was perfectly cooked, it was pleasingly firm in texture but not hard to the bite while the extra touch of Salmon Roe provides an additional burst of seafood sweetness and salty essence to the dish. The buttery creamy Foie Gras was aesthetically pleasing, however, my only gripe was the overpowering flavor from the Mushrooms. Nevertheless, it was still a delectable dish to go with the house wine. The last appetizer- Vichyssoise was flavorsome and good on its own but even better with the additional Salmon Tartar. The combination gives a very lively dimension of seafood sweetness and textures to the dish. Extra marks awarded for the Vichyssoise as it didn't conceal the freshness of the fish. These enticing appetizers definitely whet the appetite of the guests.

The Bread served with a roving basket was indeed a tummy-pleaser. It was simply too futile to resist all these warm, fresh yet fluffy breads with their butter.

Zhang Chi- Pianist

The first session of performance started after the guests have enjoyed the appetizers. Songs performed were: "Etude Op.15" (by Zhang Chi), "O Holy Night" (by Sean Ooi), "Xue Hua" (by Teresa), "If You Loved Me" (by Sean Ooi) and "Il Ba Cio" (by Teresa).Among the songs, "Xue Hua", a very calming song to praise the snow flake for sacrificing itself to nourish the earth, leaves a deep impression as compared to others.

We were amazed by the generous portion for the main- Pan Seared Chilean Cod Fish & Poached Jumbo Prawn with Chick Pea Puree, Semi Dried Tomatoes and Fresh Basil Sauce. I was especially enamored for the thick slab of juicy and tender Cod, further enlivened with the Chick Pea Puree and Fresh Basil Sauce. The permeating aroma of Chick Pea adds another dimension to the dish. The fresh and plump Prawn, on the other hand, barely registered any flavor, a rather straight forward way of presenting the seafood. The main makes a good match with some of their redolent house wine.

Teresa (left) and Sean (right)

Second round of performance started with Zhang Chi performing "Liu Yang River" followed by "Nella Fantasia" (by Sean), "E Pur Cosi/ Piangero La Sorte" (by Teresa), "Non Ti Scordar Di Me" (by Sean) and "Laughing Song" (by Teresa).

Sweet endings were Valrhona & Almond Chocolate Cannoli, Chantilly Cinnamon Mango and Bavarois Berry Lava Cake. Hitting the top notch among all three desserts was this well-executed Chantilly Cinnamon Mango, the velvety smooth cake was refreshing and light on the palate. Unlike the Chantilly cake, the Valrhona and Lava Cake appeared to be quite heavy albeit not cloying, I would personally prefer some dessert with a sour note instead. Not being a huge fan of Chocolate, the Lava cake was slightly monotonous and lacked of depth for me while the Valrhona leaves an impressionable quality but I could barely finish it off although chocolate lovers will find it tough to stop at a bite.

Guests were also served with either a cup of freshly brewed Coffee or selection of their Gourmet Tea.

The final round of performance was led by Zhang Chi's "Waltz Op. 64 No.2 and Op. 34 No. 5", followed by "All I Ask of You" and "The Prayer" (Duet- by Teresa and Sean). The spiritual song "The Prayer" was absolutely brilliant, the musicians received a standing ovation from the guests after their last song performance.

Lor Pak Gou/ Pan-Fried Carrot Cake (美味萝卜糕)

Sin Har Fu Pei Guen/ Deep-Fried Beancurd Skin with Shrimps (鲜虾鲜竹卷)

Not being a huge fan of Fried Dim Sum, I had a small piece of the Deep Fried Beancurd Skin with Shrimps. I love the bouncy texture with a slight resilient Shrimp filling, the dish was good on its own but even better with to go with some Mayonnaise and Mustard. Deep Fried food lovers will find it hard to stop at one. However, the dish was left there for quite some time for photo-shooting, it looses its crunchy and crisp texture.

Lap Mei Siew Mai/ Steamed Chinese Chicken Sausage Dumplings (腊味烧卖)

Hoi Tong Gor/ Steamed Dried Scallop Dumplings (干贝海棠果)

Siew Mai/ Minced Prawn and Chicken Dumplings with Crab Roe (蚧皇蒸烧卖)

XO Sauce Siew Mai/ Minced Prawn and Chicken with XO Sauce (XO酱烧卖)

Siew Mai, being one of the quintessential items when it comes to Dim Sum, is one of the must-order dishes here. Served piping hot, albeit it was not out-of-the-world-good, it was a pleasingly comfort dish I could possibly ask for. Being a Pork-Free hotel, Golden Phoenix serves no Pork. I was impressed by their ingenious idea of replacing Chinese Pork Sausages ("Lap Cheong") with Chicken Sausages while maintaining its subtle flavor.

Chun Pak Mai/ Steamed Tian Jin Cabbage (蚝油津白卖)

Heong Sai Char Yu Yin/ Deep Fried Fish Balls with Coriander (香茜炸鱼丸)

Pak Fa Yong Hai Low/ Stuff Crab Balls (百花酿蚧柳)

Tian Suan Yuan Yang Xia/ Steamed Prawn Dumplings with Two-flavors Sauce (甜酸鸳鸯虾)

Hak Chiew Chup Foong Chao/ Braised Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce (柱候酱凤爪)

Pao Choy Gau/ Minced Chicken, Prawn and Cabbage Dumplings (鸡冠包菜饺)

Intrigued by its presentation, the Steamed Prawn Dumplings were basically Fish Balls covered with plump and succulent Prawns doused with their home-made sauce; well, I thought the name was a misnomer as I don't seem to be able to taste the sauce with two flavors.

I was especially enamored for the dish Steamed Tian Jin Cabbage, together with the refreshing crunchy Cabbage, this Dim Sum dish was light and tame on the palate.

Hak Chiew Kwei Mei Gai/ Steamed Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce (黑椒怪味鸡)

Hitting the top notch was this well-executed dish- Steamed Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce, the silky smooth yet fork tender Chicken pieces were able to resonate among the guests. Adequately marinated, together with speckled of Black Pepper, it was extremely delectable and lip-smacking, awakening my taste buds with its piquant flavors. A must-have dish in Golden Phoenix.

Char Siew Bao/ Minced Barbecue Chicken Bun (蜜汁叉烧包)

Another quintessential item for Dim Sum, a Dim Sum meal is never said to be completed without Char Siew Bao. Three Char Siew Bao in a basket, this tummy-filling dish was served to us piping hot. The Bun was fluffy and the filling was palatable, however, the filling was slightly insufficient in my opinion. It would be better if they are able to stuff in more for a meatier bite.

Jin Yong San Bo/ Braised Stuff Vegetables with Fish Paste (煎酿三宝)

Sin Har Cheong Fun/ Steamed Rice Flour Rolls with Shrimps (鲜虾肠粉)

It was simply too futile to resist Steamed Cheong Fun, with fresh and plump Shrimps being sandwiched between the layers, doused with their sweet and flavorful Soy sauce, further enlivened with their home-made Chili paste. However, my only gripe was the Cheong Fun was slightly too thick and wasn't smooth enough to my liking. I thought the dish was mediocre.

If you are worried that having Dim Sum alone can be monotonous, then you may consider to help yourself at the buffet counter. Both Fried Rice and Stir Fried Singapore Bee Hoon/ Vermicelli Noodles were equally good but there was a slipshod in preparation- not warm enough and texture was dry, particularly the Bee Hoon. Flavor-wise, they were reasonably flavored and possessed sufficient "Wok Hei" to enhance the flavor to the brim. Golden Phoenix also offered a refreshing crunch of healthy greens- Yau Mak Choy/ Romaine Lettuce to diners, my only gripe was the Yau Mak Choy were over-cooked and not as crunchy and juicy as supposed to.

Sze Chuan Spicy and Sour Soup

Chicken Porridge

How can one misses their hearty Chicken Porridge? I adore the silky smooth texture of the Chicken Porridge and agreed on the amount of seasoning, however, extra marks will be given if they were able to provide some Century Eggs/ Salted Eggs to further enliven the dish. I did not find myself enjoying the Sze Chuan Spicy and Sour Soup though, it lacked of a "kick" in my opinion. No, it possesses the necessary spiciness but not the sourish-factor unfortunately.

We had our sweet endings of an array of Pastry Cakes, Egg Tarts as well as some Fresh Fruits. One of my favorites was their Honeydew Sago, not too sweet, a sense of simplicity without unnecessary frills. Just the way I like to end my meal.

Roti Bean Café @ Lorong Chulia, Georgetown, Penang.

Georgetown has a fair share of eateries that offer decent breakfast set but there is a greater choice to offer right now with Roti Bean Café. Opened its doors few weeks ago, Roti Bean Café is a fairly new, humble and quaint little Café in the heart of Georgetown. One could easily get confused between Lebuh Chulia and Lorong Chulia, Lorong Chulia is a small and narrow road right beside the bustling road of Lebuh Chulia; Roti Bean Cafe is facing the famous Hainamese Chu Char Coffee Shop- Sin Kheng Aun. Home-made Soya Milk, Egg Benedict, Sunny Egg Toast are some of their signature dishes (limited menu as they are still new). While the food did not appear to be gloriously good and some items on the menu need some refinement, the place worth a second visit, after all, the place is still new and I was told that more items will be coming out in the menu real soon. Ambiance is modish and laid-back; a place suitable for breakfast or even weekend brunch.  However, I don't think the place is suitable for the elderly as the stairs appear to be rather steep and it could be an issue for the aged.

While Egg Benedict is not something usual that we can find in Penang, I was excited to try theirs. I had Egg Benedict with Smoked Turkey Ham (Rm 10); the perfectly poached Egg (doused with Hollandaise Sauce) was covered in a blush of yellow at the tiny prick. The "runny" Yolk explains all. Despite I have no complaints for the Egg, I could not agree with their frisky Hollandaise sauce, probably the Chef was trying to be playful and creative, but the extra touch of Yogurt and Lemon Juice appeared to be over-powering, leaving an odd sour-note at the end. I thought the use of Roti Bengali was somehow inappropriate either, I would personally prefer fluffier bread, perhaps Sour-dough. Did I mention that I would prefer a smokier Turkey Ham either?

Their Sunny Egg Toast (Rm 5) does seem intriguing, doesn't it?  A half-boiled Egg cracked into a well-toasted toast box, completed with a fine touch Soy Sauce and sprinkle of Herbs. I must admit that the toast was well-executed, crisp on the outer layer and maintaining its fluffiness within. It tasted almost like half-boiled Egg with Toast, the dish was good but not mind-blowing, probably it didn't surprise me with the taste.

There are two types of Soya Milk available in Roti Bean Café- RB Soya Milk (Rm 3) and Signature RB Soya Milk (Rm 4). The only difference between the ordinary one and the Signature Soya Milk is the additional Horlicks flavor. The latter one, with Horlicks added, was slightly sweeter than the usual Soya Milk. I'd prefer the less-sweeten version though. Roti Bean Café serves You Tiao/ Chinese Deep Fried Bread Sticks/ 油条 on the weekends too, but they are not available on weekdays.

Eam Huat Charcoal Steamboat (炎发火炭炉) @ Batu Lanchang, Penang.

Steamboat will never go out of fashion in Penang and Penangites are always ready for steamboat. However, finding a decent steamboat with reasonable prices is getting tougher and tougher these days. Here's the place where many raved about- Eam Huat Charcoal Steamboat. The place can be quite obscure for those who are not familiar with this area, simply locate Batu Lanchang wet market and you will find Eam Huat Charcoal Steamboat right beside Central Park Condominium (opposite of Batu Lanchang wet market). Lack of air-conditioning, the place can be warm and frustrating for the heat-intolerant. Nevertheless, the quality of the steamboat (ingredients/ soup) is above par, not to mention that the prices are really wallet-friendly and reasonable too. Definitely a place where steamboat fans shall not miss!

Regardless of the package you've chosen, their steamboat "hot pot" comes with some ingredients- Deep Fried Bean Curd Skin, Dried Seaweed, Yam, Black Fungus and some Cabbages. One sip and my eyes widen, the clear broth itself was ridiculously sweet and flavorful but NO, it does not contain any Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), we didn't feel the thirst after having the steamboat. I love the way they soaked and cooked the Yam, they were aesthetically pleasing and delectable. Their home-made Sambal and chopped Bird Eye's Chili are some lovely accompaniment to the ingredients.

We had the Rm100 package which comes with Fish (both Raw and Deep Fried version), Prawns, Cuttle Fish, Fish Balls, Meat Balls, Fish Dumplings, Crab sticks, Fish Maw, Quail Eggs, Bean Curd Sheet, Enoki Mushrooms and some Vermicelli Noodles (Bee Hoon). If I may, the seafood were extremely fresh and succulent, I was especially enamored for their Deep Fried Fish, slightly a bit bouncy but not too tough to chew, the texture was just perfect to my liking. You may find other packages priced at Rm 60, Rm 80, Rm 150 and Rm 200 respectively.

We also had an extra order of Fish Paste Noodles at Rm 5 per plate. I just love the bouncy texture of the noodles, with a hint of seafood sweetness within. A great choice for "add-on".

Namoo Korean Dessert Cafe and Bistro on The Park @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

Despite of the myriad eateries in Gurney Plaza Penang, the mall is in dearth of a good Korean restaurant and now, there is a greater variety to offer to Korean fans. "Namoo", which generally refers to trees in Korean, is an authentic Korean restaurant fused with a modern yet playful twist. Namoo has its first outlet opened at Publika, KL and now, second outlet here at the iconic location of al-fresco dining area at Gurney Plaza Penang (right beside Black Canyon Restaurant and opposite to Chili's). The menu is extensive, covering some of their carefully crafted yet quirky dishes such as Rice Burgers, Pasta, Omuto, Korean desserts and an array of their meticulously prepared cakes. Ambiance is modish and laid back; making it a perfect place for friends' gatherings and get-together or after-work chill-out. When you are at Namoo, try to look at their decor which adhere to the theme- "trees". There is also an al-fresco dining section outside of the restaurant for those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance.

One of the much-lauded items we had was this Beef Rice Burger (Rm 23.90), where a thick slab of juicy Beef patty and a "Sunny Side Up" being sandwiched between two pieces of crisp and chewy grilled Korean Rice "Bun". The dish comes with Banchan/ Side dishes like Fries, Kimchi and Fresh Greens. As for the Rice, it comes in a slightly chewy resistance, some what similar to Glutinous Rice, with the edges being torched to a crisp. I was especially enamored with their tender yet juicy meat patty, further enlivened with Cheese and a "runny" egg yolk; this dish will make any burger lovers weak in the knees. This dish was ethereal. *Recommended*

Spicy Seafood Pasta (Rm 23.90) was a playful dish with an acquired taste, it comes with two plump and succulent Prawns, a Mussel and some Squid Rings, as well as Zucchini. The Fettuccine was adequately sauteed with Korean sweet and spicy sauce. However, the dish turned out to be a tad salty for our palates. This medley of sweet, savory and spicy sauce lacked of depth and can be monotonous if one were to finish it alone.

This enticing Chicken White Cream Omuto (Rm 19.90) was a tummy-pleasing dish. Korean Fried Rice covered with a blanket of fluffy Omelette, topped with Fried Chicken and doused White Cream sauce. Sides were Fresh Greens and Kimchi. As much as I adore how the cream sauce blended well with the Korean Fried Rice and fluffy Omelette, I thought the Fried Chicken was slightly too dry in texture. The dish tasted similar to Cheese Baked Rice, with a hint of smokiness from the Fried Rice and creaminess from the Cream Sauce; albeit not mind-blowing but I'd say this was a pleasingly comforting dish that I could possibly ask for.

Our sweet endings started with Hottuk Pancake (Rm 12.90), a chewy Cinnamon Pancake slathered with their Strawberry Sauce, topped with a dollop of Whipped Cream and completed with a fresh Strawberry. The dessert does not taste as sweet as it looks but the taste can be inexplicable, as though it lacks of something. In fact, I would prefer them to have served the Strawberry Sauce separately instead. The Cinnamon flavor might be too strong for some and it would be great if the texture could be slightly softer. Overall, I thought this dessert was just mediocre.

Intrigued by its name, The King's Bing Soo (Rm 17.90) comes in a gigantic portion, with some silky smooth milky shaved ice base with Rice Cakes, Red Beans, Strawberries, Banana, Kiwi and Vanilla Ice Cream sprinkled with Multi-grain Powder and Nuts. A rather straight forward dessert which equates to local "Ice Kacang", simple yet refreshing. Extra marks for the Vanilla Ice Cream, which came in smooth and robust in flavor; I just wish I could had more of the Ice Cream. The only draw back could be the price of this dessert, which can be quite grueling on the wallet.

One of their top-selling items, Sweet Potato Cake (Rm 12.90) is not something usual that can be found else where. The cake has a buttery Sponge cake base with a thick layer of tangy Sweet Potato Paste spread with Cream. This cake is a must-try for Sweet Potato lovers, the flavor of the Sweet Potato Paste was so intense that it lingers in your taste buds for some time. The cake was sweet but not cloying, a rather ingenious creation. However, sharing is recommended due to the substantial portion and the cake can be monotonous if one were to finish it entirely.

It was my first attempt on this Mat Tang/ Korean Caramel Sweet Potato Bites (Rm 14.90), Korean Rice Cake was added too, completed with a dip of Yuzu/ Korean Citrus Fruit sauce. The chewy Korean Rice Cake was good on its own but even better with their Korean Yuzu sauce, a very interesting and refreshing combination indeed. However, the Sweet Potatoes were slightly too hard in texture for me. As this dessert can be quite filling, sharing is encouraged. Quite an exquisite experience though but I am not sure whether I will be coming back for this.

A refreshing Yuza Virgin Mojito (Rm 12.90) was just perfect for a sultry evening.

Green Tea Latte (Rm 9.90)

G-Xiang (奇香港式风味云吞面) @ Taman Lip Sin, Penang.

$

Being an ardent fan of noodles, I have been constantly looking for some decent Wanton Noodles and Shrimp Roe Noodles (虾子面), coincidentally, this place was introduced by a friend of mine- Sunflower. Located at Taman Lip Sin, where Sunshine Lip Sin and Red Tea Garden Dim Sum are situated. G-Xiang is facing the main road and should be quite obvious if you were to enter to Sunshine Lip Sin using the main entrance. Wanton Noodles and Shrimp Roe Noodles are some of their signature dishes, their menu is simple and earnest, offering their best dishes to diners. Despite the foods were not mind-blowing, but they do give me some standard satisfactions, I thought the prices are reasonable too; with ample parking spaces available at the basement of the building, I'd coming back for more!

It is simply too futile to resist this Hong Kong Shrimp Roe Noodles/ 香港虾子面 (Rm 6 for small). The perfectly cooked noodles were speckled with toasted Shrimp Roe, giving a orange hue to the noodles. Don't look down on these Shrimp Roe, albeit they are small in size but they are big in flavors! Cooked al-dente, the noodles possessed the perfect texture to my liking, with the extra touch of seafood sweetness and salty essence from the Shrimp Roe, it was indeed, a glorious combination. It was quite obvious that some Pork Lards were being added, however, the noodles were in a dire need of sauce, probably measly drops of Soya Sauce would be great. The bowl of noodles comes with three Wanton/ Prawn Dumplings too; with fresh and "bursty" prawns within, the Prawn Dumplings are the must-have items in G-Xiang. However, the portion could be too small for most of us, unless you have petite appetite, I would recommend the larger ones.

The star dish of the day has to be this Char Siew/ Barbecue Pork Wanton Noodles/ 叉烧云吞面 (Rm 4.50 for small), the soul to this gloriously good dish was the extra dribble of their starchy gravy which was able to cling well on the noodles. One slurp and my eyes widen, in fact, I thought this was better than their Shrimp Roe Noodles. Similarly, it comes with some of their Barbecue Pork slices, Braised Shitake Mushrooms and Prawn Dumplings/ Wanton. The noodles were great but even better with some Chilies for the extra "kick". However, I would not say this was the best as I have eaten some better ones, nevertheless, quite a decent one to satiate my cravings for Wanton Noodles.

We had an extra order of their Sui Kow/ Prawn Dumplings/ 鲜虾水饺汤 too (Rm 7 for 6 pieces). The dumplings were average-okay and the prawns were plump and succulent, however, the dish seems to lack of something. My guess would be the sauce, something to amp up the flavor. On the other hand, the clear soup was good though, straight-forward and abundant flavorsome.

Braised Chicken Feet/ 五香卤鸡脚 (Rm 4) might not be something that can be accepted by all. Their Chicken Feet were well-executed and braised till fall-apart-tender. The sauce seems to be able to provide the necessary flavors to the Chicken Feet, however, one slipshod in serving the Chicken Feet was the lack of some sweet Chili Sauce. It's a norm to have Chicken Feet with Chili Sauce, Curry Mee with Chili Paste and Chicken Rice with Garlic Chili Sauce right? Also, I wish the portion was larger for that price though.

Okomen Japanese Restaurant @ Queensbay Mall, Penang.

Okomen is a name/term formed by Okonomiyaki/ Japanese Pizza and Ramen, which suggest to us that Okomen specializes in serving Okonomiyaki and Ramen. Okomen Japanese Restaurant, a KL-based Japanese restaurant has recently opened its door to diners at level three (Queens Street) of Queensbay Mall Penang. Being an ardent fan of Ramen, I just couldn't wait to check the place out. The menu is not extensive but sufficient to please Okonomiyaki and Ramen lovers, unlike usual Japanese restaurants, they do not serve any Sushi nor Sashimi. Prices are considered reasonable in Penang's context albeit some dishes are priced on the higher side. However, there were some hits and misses for the dishes we had, some items on the menu need some refinement. I'd probably come back for a second visit but strictly for novelty instead of absolute taste.

One of their signature dishes- Yasai/ Vegetables Okonomiyaki (Rm 14.80). Served on a scorching hot plate, the warmness of the Okonomiyaki is assured. It comes with a substantial portion; the Okonomiyaki was slathered with some of their sweet but lip-smacking Okonomiyaki Sauce and Mayonnaise, sprinkled with a generous amount of Dashi flakes. This enticing combo definitely whets up my appetite with its uniquely sweet and savory flavors. A must try item for Okonomiyaki fans.

Their Tontaro Pork Yakisoba (Rm 16.80) which consists of Pork slices, Cabbage, Mushrooms and Dashi flakes was a crowd pleaser. The al-dente Ramen was sufficiently stir fried with their home-made Yakisoba sauce; possessed with adequate "Wok Hei" and a hint of sweetness; every bit of the dish was a joy to eat. Yakisoba lovers will find it hard to stop at one mouth.

Gekara/ Spicy Tamago Ramen (Rm 16.80) is a misnomer. It has no significant differences compared to the usual Miso Ramen, the only difference was the spoon of Spicy Minced Meat and no, it was not spicy at all. To my dismal, the broth was a tad salty for my palates and lacked of a "kick". Furthermore, the Tamago/ Braised Egg was over-cooked, which I was expecting a "runny" egg yolk in the middle. Fortunately, the Ramen was al-dente to my liking but I am not looking forward to a second attempt after this disappointment.

Similarly, do not harbor high expectations on Aka Oni/ Red Miso Tamago Ramen (Rm 15.80), albeit slightly better than their Butao Ramen, the broth was salty and not thick/rich enough to my liking. I do understand that authentic Ramen comes with bold flavors but this was slightly above my level of acceptance. It did not resonate with the guests either.

Assam/ Lemak Laksa @ Balik Pulau, Penang.

$

Penang Assam Laksa, being voted as the Top 10 Yummiest food in Asia by CNN, is the quintessential Penangite favorite food. Speaking of Assam Laksa, my favorite Assam Laksa can be found here, at Nan Guang Coffee House, Balik Pulau (or commonly known as Balik Pulau Laksa). I am quite sure most local food experts or patrons are familiar with this coffee house, this place is famous of its Assam Laksa, as well as Lemak Laksa. Balik Pulau you wonder. Balik Palau is a quiet village approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour drive from the heart of Georgetown. Penangites have no qualm in driving all these meandering roads up the hill just for a bowl of decent Laksa, but of course, the place will be thronged by tourists especially during Durian season. It should be quite easy to spot this place, if you are using the Paya Terubong- Bukit Jambul road to Balik Pulau, you should be able to see this place at the T-junction after passing the Balik Pulau Market. I was told by some friends that they thought the Laksa here was average-okay but I guess everyone has his/her own favorite right? Where's your favorite place for Assam Laksa ?

Heavily influenced by Thai Laksa, Lemak Laksa (Rm 3.50) is not too common in the island. The broth itself carries a hint of sweetness as well as the creamy and distinctive flavors inherited from Coconut Milk. The soul to Laksa lies at the Shrimp Paste/ Hae Kor, a drizzle of that dark, thick and sweet Shrimp Paste does make a huge difference, it gives a very unique seafood sweetness to the Laksa. One strong reason why I adore their Laksa so much was their noodles. Unlike any other Laksa stalls, their very own version of Laksa noodles are springier and bouncier, or al-dente.

This mouth-watering Assam Laksa (Rm 3.50) was delectable and robust in flavors. It has a medley of sweet, sour and spicy notes. One sip of the broth widens my eyes, pulsating with flavors, the sourish broth was appetizingly delightful. No, it was not too spicy and it should be perfectly okay for the spicy-intolerant. Extra condiments such as Peppermint Leaves, Cucumbers, Pineapples give an extra crunchy yet intricate texture to the dish. An aesthetically pleasing bowl of comfort food that I can ask for, well, exclusively in Penang.

Intrigued by its presentation, the Achari Paneer (鲜辣芝士沙拉), a type home-made Indian Cheese, possesses a rather similar texture to Feta Cheese, but mild in cheesy flavor. The intricate and quirky combination between Curry Powder and Cheese was somewhat playful and exotic that will not be easily accepted. You will either like it or go against it. Unfortunately, I belong to the latter group.

Hitting the top notch was this delightful dish- Deep Fried Pakoras (香酥炸蔬菜), albeit slightly oilier to my liking, the Pakoras were being deep fried till perfection, crisp and crunchy; good on its own but even better with the addition of Madras Curry Mayo, which gives a boost to the rather straight forward Indian snack.

The Soup Mulligatawny (印度香料汤) was a little less successful, I was impressed with Chef's creative idea of adding a playful element to the soup- Rice, with a touch of Green Apple; giving the soup a more layered dimension. However, I could not agree with a soup which possesses a quite similar flavor and taste as Curry; as though I was drinking Curry as Soup. I thought the soup was just a mediocre.

Chicken Tikka Masala (马沙拉香浓鸡), Chicken marinated with Indian herbs, was being deep fried till golden brown; the chicken managed to lock the moisture within, however, the flavors from the herbs do not seem to be able to infuse within. The unique fragrance of the herbs were too mild to be tasted, probably they should marinate the chicken for a longer period of time. I was not impressed by the dish.

Another dish that deserves the spotlight will be this dish- Goan Fish Curry (印度传统咖哩鱼), the Curry was robust in flavors while the fish was cooked till perfection, pleasingly firm but not hard to the bite. One could easily gobble a plate of steaming hot rice with a dribble of their Curry. Its definitely a dish worth to look forward to for this themed buffet.

The dish- Sindhi Kadhi (咖哩蔬菜锅) which mainly consists of Chick Peas, Potatoes and Carrots, barely registered any significant taste. The Curry was slightly too watery and diluted to my liking, I would personally prefer a stronger Curry flavor, also, I do hope the Chef could possibly come out with something unexpected to the otherwise unsurprising flavor.

Another note-worthy dish will be this Murgh Aloo Masala (香浓马铃薯) featuring mainly Potatoes and Cauliflower. Potatoes are known as Aloo in Tamil while Gobi refers to Cauliflower. The vegetables were adequately seasoned with flavors, while maintaining the standard crunch of the Cauliflower. It was not out-of-the-world-good but it does score a standard-satisfactory mark.

The well-executed Lamb Briyani (羊肉焖饭) was able to resonate among the guests. Backed by expertise, Chef Khazali was able to infuse a strong dose of spices to the Briyani Rice with the melange herbs and spices. It's unique savory flavor struck my palates, with the perfect texture, it goes well with any types of the curries available. Chunks of Lamb were hidden within, however, the gamy smell of the lamb was there and it might be unappealing for some. Chicken Briyani is also available and will be rotated tentatively.

How can one misses Mango Lassi (芒果拉昔) out when it comes to Indian cuisine? Swez Brasserie's Manga Lassi was good, albeit not mind-blowing; it was a very refreshing end and respite from sheer sinful indulgence. With a hint of sourness, the well-chilled Mango Lassi was topped with some fresh Mangoes; the lovely combination exudes harmonious flavors that should not be missed by Mango lovers.

I was looking forward to try the Gulap Jamun (玖瑰黄金球), a dessert made of flour and Cinnamon, being deep fried till golden brown and soaked in Sugar Syrup. Unfortunately, the deceiving little balls were way too sweet for my palates. The Cinnamon flavor was rather mild or were my taste buds being masked by the cloying sweetness. I could not even finish the dessert off.

All these wonderful dishes were carefully prepared by Chef Bakri (Head Chef of Malay Kitchen of Eastin Hotel Penang), Chef Khazali (Chef De Partie of Eastin Hotel Penang) and Chef Buvanes (Pastry Chef of Eastin Hotel Penang).

Overall, there were some hits and misses here and there, some refinements need to be made for certain dishes, I was expecting some dishes to be fiery hot to satiate my cravings for curries but most of them were far from expectations. Nevertheless, it's going to be a very good theme for Indian food lovers, particularly those who enjoy their foods heavily infused with the delightful flavors of herbs and spices.

Sumida Japanese Restaurant @ Prima Tanjung, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

There are quite a number of Japanese restaurants sprouting out in Penang these days, with the 3 newly opened Japanese chain restaurant- Sushi Zanmai, Pasta Zanmai and Rakuzen, the competition between these Japanese eateries seems to be pretty intense. There's this quiet yet humble Japanese restaurant within Prima Tanjung which has been in business for more than 8 years, many regulars are still coming back for the affordable yet quality Japanese meals. Service was up to par but the waiting time during my visit was rather long, the lady owner did apologize to every single customer for that part which makes me feel very customer-oriented. I like the place being quiet and unpretentious, as well as the affordable Japanese dishes. Sumida Japanese Restaurant is right beside Brix and Baume Bakery (previously known as Ritz Bakery). The only drawback about this place is the variety, the choices seem to be rather limited, most of the dishes being Bento set, as for those who prefer noodles (be it Ramen or Soba), this might not be an ideal place for you....

I wanted something light and not too filling that evening, hence, I had their Cha Soba for Rm 15. The set doesn't come with any other dishes or ingredients, plain Green Tea Soba topped with shredded Japanese Seaweed as well as their chilled Japanese Soy Dipping Sauce. The Cold Soba was delicate with a fine extra touch of Japanese Wasabi and chopped Spring Onions will further enhance the flavor. A decent choice for Soba lovers.

With just Rm 35, the set Sumida Bonmori is a noteworthy choice which worth the value. The set comes with some Sashimi, Unagi, Tempura, Rice, Salad, Chawan Mushi etc. Sashimi was fresh but it was not thick enough for the extra bite; I guess it's justifiable with the price. The well-executed Tempura came in crisp and crunchy, Prawns and other vegetables being very fresh and nicely done as well.

Sanma Shioyaki (Rm 14) comes with a generous piece of Sanma fish, perfectly grilled, garnished with some grated Daikon. The set includes Rice, Salad and Chawan Mushi as well. The Sanma was flavorsome with a hint of bitterness inherited from the fish, quite an exquisite taste. On the other hand, their Chawan Mushi was impressive; it was smooth and lightly seasoned to my liking. The best part was, it was served to us piping hot.

The lady owner of Sumida recommended this Surume Ika Bata-Yaki (Rm 22) to us that evening, the gigantic but perfectly grilled Squid was perfect. I like this dish being simple, straight forward and delectable, the tentacles were resilient but the body was perfectly cooked, it was very tender and juicy. An additional sprinkle of Salt and a dash of zingy Lemon Juice will amp up the flavors and serve the dish well. Good to go with some Japanese beer or Soju.

Guests at the hotel lobby waiting for the official opening were being served a cup of chilled and refreshing drink- blended Nutmeg with Ginger Ale, sweet with a hint of Nutmeg and spicy end.

In the Q&A session, Mr. Kurt Vieren (General Manager of Four Points by Sheraton Penang) says that he would like to put his focus in promoting the food and restaurants in the hotel, offering delectable dishes at very reasonable prices to Penangites!

"Passing the Key"- Mr. Charles Abbott (Left 1), Madam Elsie Chua (Left 2), Mr. Kurt Vieren (Middle) and Ms. Janice Yeo (Right 1- Senior Manager, Brand Management of Asia Pacific Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft, Element).

Guests were then invited for a buffet lunch at the restaurant- The Eatery. I was rather surprised to find out the interesting buffet spread at the restaurant- Cheese Platter, Black Mussels, Scallops, Smoked Salmon, Roasted Beef/ Chicken/ Lamb, Fresh Greens, Spanish Seafood Paella, Tiramisu and more. The Eatery offers buffet breakfast only for the time being, more buffet themes (Christmas and New Year) will be coming out soon.

The Eatery:
Buffet Breakfast (6:30am to 10:30am Daily)- Rm 49 + (6% government tax).

Cheese lovers will be pleased to see the Cheese Platter available, which consists of Blue Cheese, Brie, Cheddar and some cream crackers to go with the cheese. It offered a refreshing crunch of healthy greens such as Celery, Cucumber and Carrot in the face of sheer sinful indulgence too.

Seafood lovers will be amazed and spoiled by the choices available- Blanched Scallops, Black Mussels, succulent Prawns. The Prawns were not over-cooked, they were pleasingly firm but not hard to the bite. Perfect to savor with just a dash of Lemon Juice to further enliven the natural seafood sweetness within. The Smoked Salmon, on the other hand, was slightly saltier than expected but I was impressed by the thickness of the fish though.

Its not common to see Spanish Seafood Paella in any buffets, Four Points by Sheraton Penang's version scored an okay-average from me. No doubt the seafood were fresh but the seafood sweetness failed to infuse within; mild in flavors and lacked of the "X" factor. It needs some refinement but it has potential. The Roasted Beef was little less successful either, it was dry and the texture was rough. Worst part was, the lack of a good sauce to go with it. Among the dishes I had, the Sambal Curry Squid with Petai was lip-smacking. Slightly resilient but not hard to chew, the dish was good but even better spooned over rice. Other dishes available were Kung Po Chicken, Sze Chuan Spicy Lamb, Stir Fried Broccoli with Mushrooms, Cheese Baked Oysters and Sauteed Potato Cubes etc.

The sweet endings were Pseudo Mille Feuille, Moist Chocolate Cake, Tiramisu, Creme Brulee, Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce and assorted Nyonya Kuih. I was especially enamored with their Pesudo Mille Feuille, the crisp and thin layers of Phyllo were slathered with their velvety smooth Vanilla Cream; very sinful but worth the calories. The Bread Pudding was okay, kept warm but the disappointment comes after the Vanilla sauce which lacked of a very strong Vanilla essence. There is also an al-fresco dining section on the side of the restaurant, facing the straits of Malacca; having your desserts in the middle of a stunning view is indeed a wonderful life moment.

The Best Brew Pub features a sleek and stylish outdoor deck overlooking the spectacular sea view, guests can savor delicious snacks and indulge in a worldly collection of beers including authentic local favorites and imported beers. It is simply too futile to resist Pasta dishes starting at Rm 15+, wouldn't it be great to savor cheap and good pasta dishes in a pub with such relaxing-vibe?

Tua Wa Kong (大碗公) @ 8 Row, Krian Road, Penang.

With our lifestyle being more modernized and cosmopolitan, consumers are expecting more in terms of ambiance, everyone wishes to seek for air-conditioned places for quick lunches. Seeing this as an opportunity, Tua Wa Kong serves its signature dishes while providing a fully air-conditioned place but preserving authentic and traditional flavors. Using recipes passed down from previous generations, Tua Wa Kong at 8 Row of Krian Road, is one of the few that offers Dry Hokkien Prawn Noodles. As much as it provides a cooling environment to the otherwise sultry afternoon, the place lacks of a good ventilation system which caught us smothered in the "aroma". One might find oneself smells like crustacean after a meal there. Service could have been better as empty bowls were found scattered around. Prices are considered reasonable considering the substantial portion and the generous amount of ingredients added; definitely a worth-dropping by place if you are in the vicinity.

Dry Hokkien Mee with Pork (Regular- Rm 8.50) is one of their signature dishes. Vermicelli Noodles/ Bee Hoon and Yellow Noodles were cooked together with their broth which boiled for long hours to extract the essence of the crustacean; topped with Braised Pork, Hard Boiled Egg, Water Spinach, Sprouts, Shrimps and Fish Balls. The noodles were imbued with a pleasingly delightful aroma; the thick and rich broth clung well to the noodles too. Great on its own but even better with the magical mix of their home-made Chili Paste. However, the noodles were slightly over-cooked and soggy in texture as compared to the other version but probably this is how they are doing it to ensure the flavors and seafood sweetness blended well with the noodles.

The star dish has to be their Soup Hokkien Prawn Mee (Regular- Rm 8.50) which comes in a substantial portion. The orange-red hue broth was brimming with flavors; with traces of Pork Lards and Tomatoes, the hearty broth complements the noodles perfectly. Every bit was a joy to eat, I'd personally prefer this Soup version over Dry version, probably I found myself enjoying their delightful broth. A slipshod preparation where they could have deveined the the Prawn before serving to diners. If you must know, I thought the Hokkien Mee we had were slightly above par but might not be the best still. What's your say?

There are generally two types of Chili Paste available, the Hot & Spicy version and the milder version. The lip numbing Hot Chili Paste does add another layer of flavors to the noodles, while the latter version veers towards the sweeter side.
